TRI4cure Me and my sister's journey to raise awareness and funds for Rett Syndrome research in hope for ultimately finding a cure for this debilitating disorder.

Hi, my name is Kye. I am a triathlete in my 7th year of competing. My sister Pia was diagnosed of Rett Syndrome at the age of 2. She cannot walk, talk, eat nor do many other things that we able bodied people take for granted. She goes through a lot including epilectic seizures, broken bones from osteopenea, chest infections and pneumonia, to name a few and a simple cold can send her to hospital, a

t times for an extended period of time. But when she is well, she is the happiest smiley little girl full of personality and attitude;) And she always accompany me and support me at all of my races. The idea of racing with her came up to me a while ago, but in November 2014, we raced our first event together at the Noosa Tingirana Special Triathlon. During our journey, we have raised awareness for Rett Syndrome and over US$7,000 were donated by our generous supporters for the research in the name of our project "TRI4cure". We had another successful year in 2015, raising US$1,780 for Rett Syndrome Research Trust. Now that the triathlon season is over for the Team TRI4cure, we have more exciting plans ahead including our first 10km run together. We would like to keep going and keep fighting, in hope that one day there will be a cure found for this debilitating disorder! Thank you for your ongoing support and I hope you can follow Pia and I in our journey!

Pia, instead of me pushing you in your running chair, I know you’ll be pushing me to the finish line from my back.
Once again, purple balloons will rise into the blue sky at —a reminder that every step I take is with you.

Team Pia, I look forward to seeing you all💜
And good luck to everyone who’s running, no matter the distance. See you out on the course!

So amazing to see this💜Well done to Andee and Davina on their run.

At 1:35am on Sunday, 25 May 2025, my Pia took her last breath in this world.

As much as I thought I knew it was going to happen, nothing prepared me for life after Pia.

Throughout her 20 years of life, she became my life, and I was hers. The day she left this world, not only did I lose her, but I lost myself too. Not “a piece of myself” — I lost my entire self. I don’t know who I’m meant to be or what I’m meant to be doing with my life anymore. I’m just living, one impossible day at a time.

It hurts beyond words to think that I have to go on living the rest of my life without her. At the same time, I find some peace in knowing that she is no longer suffering, that she is finally free from pain.

Today, I ticked off another box on our bucket list. I’m in Sydney, looking over the harbour lit up for Vivid Festival. Pia would have loved it. I don’t know if she is with me, but I will always carry her in my heart.

Thank you to everyone who has been there for me and Kye over the past year — for calling, messaging, and checking in on us. We are so lucky to have you in our lives.

For someone who never said a word, she was such a special girl who left a big impact on everyone who knew and loved her.

I miss her.

Parkrun has always been a big part of our running journey. For years, Pia and I had a goal of reaching the 50 Parkrun milestone together, but sadly she never got the chance to achieve it.

So tomorrow, I’ll be completing her 50th Parkrun at Mudgeeraba parkrun. If anyone is able to join us there, that would be wonderful. Alternatively, if you’re doing your local Parkrun, I’d love for you to wear a touch of purple to help celebrate Pia’s running journey💜

Merry Christmas from Team Pia.
