Your baby lifted straight onto your skin. Still wet. Still warm from you. No corridor between the moment they arrive and the moment they land on your chest.

Reshared from Calmbirth Labour runs on oxytocin. This is the hormone that drives contractions - but, it’s also really shy, and it does’t flow quite as well when your body senses it’s being watched or feels unsafe.

Adrenaline on the other hand, is the hormone at the opposite end of the spectrum.

It’s released the moment your nervous system senses threat, whether real or perceived. It can be triggered by many things such as bright lights, strangers being in the room, feeling like you’re in a space that isn’t yours, or even being questioned when you’re halfway through a contraction.

The problem is, that when adrenaline rises it directly competes with oxytocin and can cause your labour to slow down or stall.

This is why familiarity is so important in labour. It’s not just sentimental, it’s actually physiological! A space where you feel protected, private and undisturbed is a space where your body is more likely to feel safe to do what it knows how to do.

Wherever you’re planning to give birth, it’s super important to chat with your pregnancy care provider about what would help you feel safest while you’re there.

The placenta, amniotic sac, and umbilical cord are so much more than anatomy—they are a baby’s very first home.

The embryonic sac gently surrounds and protects, creating a warm, fluid-filled space where they can grow safely. The placenta delivers oxygen and nutrients while supporting their development throughout the pregnancy. And, the umbilical cord is the beautiful connection between mother and baby, transporting the oxygen and nutrients.

Our bodies truly are extraordinary - we grow a whole organ to nourish and grow our babies ✨
