Access Control - What is it?

In simple terms - access control is a security measure whereby access to resources is regulated. Access control determines who, or what can access those resources by guaranteeing that users are who they say they are.

There are two main types of access control - physical and logical. Physical Access Controls means just that - gates, locks, card readers etc, whereas Logical Access Control is the software behind it.

Methods used by access control systems to identify, authenticate and authorise users to assess required login credentials vary. They can include personal identification numbers (PINs), passwords, biometric scans, security tokens and others. credentials authentication requires two or more authentication factors and is often an important part of layered defence to protect access control systems.

There are 3 main types of accesscontrol.

Mandatory Access Control (MAC): Access rights are regulated by a central authority based on multiple levels of security.

Discretionary Access Control (DAC): Policies define who or what is authorized to access the resource.

Role Based Access Control (RBAC): RBAS is widely used, and restricts access based on individuals or groups with defined roles, rather than on the identities of individual users.

An interesting article on the power of our mind, and our attitudes. The article suggests that succeeding at school or university is about more than memorizing vast amounts of information and impressing professors with ingenious ideas. A growing body of scientific investigation now supports the conclusion that being hopeful has a distinctly positive effect on academic performance. I would imagine that a hopeful and optimistic outlook would play an important part in all aspects of our life, not just our academic abilities. http://bigthink.com/hope-optimism/why-being-hopeful-rather-than-optimistic-will-make-you-a-better-student
