Thank you to everyone who campaigned and voted for Left Action - Free Palestine!
We won the Welfare, Education, Environment and Ethnocultural offices (all of the office bearer roles that we ran for!) plus 4 SRC councillors and 3 delegates to the NUS, an amazing result for left wing and pro Palestine activism at UNSW!
We talked to thousands of students throughout election week. Students are rightly angry about all the other horrors of our world today.
The past two years have seen a horrific genocide in Gaza, supported by our government and university, and the brutal oppression of the Palestinians continues despite the ceasefire. All across the world the far right is on the rise, political movements that are inspired by the Trump regime and all their attacks on workers and the oppressed. Even centre governments, like our Labor government, are overseeing cost of living crises and would rather give money to weapons and fossil fuel companies than welfare or education.
In the face of all this, student activism is more important than ever. Students have always played an important role in fighting for social justice like the fights against the Vietnam war and South African apartheid.
Student unions should be activist bodies that organise students to fight around the issues they care about. That’s what Left Action has done with our positions in 2025, and what students have voted for again for the 2026 SRC!
