NSW SES Randwick Unit

NSW SES Randwick Unit NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is the combat agency for flood, storm & tsunami. We also have members trained to conduct flood rescues from land and in water.

NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency and rescue service dedicated to assisting the community. We are a volunteer-based organisation that provides emergency assistance to the people of NSW 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is the approximately 9,000 volunteers across the state that make this possible. NSW SES Volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing with th

em many different skills, interests and backgrounds. They are united by the purpose of supporting their communities in times of need. While our major responsibilities are for flood and storm emergencies, NSW SES also provides the majority of general rescue effort in the rural parts of the state. This includes:

Road accident rescue
Vertical rescue
Bush search and rescue
Evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of NSW. The organisations trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. NSW SES also assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. Members of the Randwick Unit are regularly involved with storm and water damage operations. We can also be called upon to perform land search operations as well as urban search and rescue, in support of NSW Police Force and Fire & Rescue NSW. If you require emergency assistance due to storm or flood, call NSW SES on 132 500. In life threatening emergencies, call 000.

🚧 Operational Update 9pm, 2nd July

🌧️ Gusty winds and persistent rain led to 28 storm related incidents for NSW SES in the Randwick City Council area as a result of this weather event.

⚠️ A warning is still current for damaging south to southwesterly winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h possible this evening, along the most exposed parts of the coastal fringe from the South Coast through to the Mid North Coast, including Wollongong and the eastern Sydney Metropolitan.

💨 Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds during Thursday morning.

👷🏽‍♂️👷‍♀️ We have two vehicles of crew attending to the three incidents that are outstanding in our local area from today. We’ve had multiple teams in the field around the clock and we also attended some incidents in western Sydney late last night.

🙏 Our thanks to the employers and families who have released our volunteers from their other committments so they could be a part of our crews.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE - PREPARE NOW AND STAY INFORMED!

⚠️ Severe weather is possible this week, with a developing coastal low-pressure system expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain, powerful surf and coastal damage to parts of the NSW coastline this week. The main impact is expected between Tuesday & Thursday.

ℹ We are strongly urging the community to begin preparing your homes and businesses for storm conditions, and keep an eye out for any severe weather warnings.

PREPARE NOW!

🏡 NSW SES advises that people should:

✔️ Park your car under secure cover and away from trees and powerlines

✔️ Secure or put away items, such as outdoor furniture, trampolines and roofing iron that could blow around in strong winds

✔️ Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences or solar panels

✔️ Check that your gutters and drains are clear of leaves and debris

✔️ Trim and cut tree branches which may fall and cause damage

✔️ Report fallen power lines to Ausgrid (13 13 88) or the provider shown shown on your power bill

✔️ Prepare an emergency kit in case you lose power or need to leave your home

✔️ Monitor the conditions and keep an eye out for warnings issued by the BOM or NSW SES.

Remember!

🚧 During and after periods of heavy rainfall, flash floods can appear quickly without warning. There may not be a warning or signage. Be vigilant on the roads and make smart choices. Do not enter flood water.

As National Volunteer Week draws to a close, we again thank our incredible volunteers, who have been working hard both locally and further afield. Our thanks also to their employers, friends and family who have excused them from their usuall duties.

In the Randwick City Council local area our volunteers have been on call to respond to storm and flash flood incidents resulting from the wet weather, including the large banksia branch that came down in Coogee recently (pictured).

We have also worked closely with NSW SES
City of Sydney unit and others from across the state in responding to the northern floods. Our volunteers have deployed in roles including Flood Rescue Coordination, Incident Managementent, Flood Rescue Operators, High Clearance Vehicle operators (driving the mogs), Public Information and Community Liaison Officers.

Our unit has grown quite a lot over the last few years and we have outgrown our current headquarters where we train and develop our members and store all our gear. Council are working to provide us with a suitable new location and we look forward to moving into a premises where we can be better prepared to serve our community.

We were delighted for some of our members to join Jihad Dib MP the Hon Minister for Emergency Services and MPs from all parties at Parliament House last week including Ron Hoenig MP ahead of ‘Wear Orange Wednesday’ today.

Our thanks not only to all of our amazing volunteers, but also to their family, friends and employers who enable them to often leave without notice to attend to emergencies. Right now we have members deployed north to support flooding in Northern Zone and members on standby for local incidents with further severe weather possible later this week.

🌟 WOW Day – Wear Orange Wednesday! 🌟

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers of the NSW SES 🧡. Their dedication and service in our communities inspire us all. Whether they’re responding to catastrophic disasters or emergencies, as 1600 of them now are now on the Mid North Coast or the Hunter, these amazing individuals show us what it truly means to serve. Join us in showing your appreciation by wearing orange today! 🧡

A special shoutout to Levi and Elias from NSW SES Randwick Unit, Luke from NSW SES Coffs Harbour, and Nicolas from the NSW SES City of Sydney who were at the Parliament of NSW Thank you for the important work you do.🧡

⚠️ Coastal Hazard Warning for HAZARDOUS AND DAMAGING SURF 🌊

📍For people in parts of Hunter, Metropolitan and Mid North Coast Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:32 am Sunday, 18 May 2025 by Bureau of Meteorology

ℹ️ Damaging Surf Possible from Tonight

🌧️ Weather Situation: A cold front is bringing fresh south to southwesterly winds to coastal areas from tonight. Winds will then turn southeasterly and strengthen as a coastal trough off the coast deepens, bringing fresh to strong and gusty winds and elevated waves to central coasts overnight into Monday. This system may re-intensify later in the week, with the strongest winds dependent on its location.

🌊 LARGE AND POWERFUL SURF CONDITIONS are possible between Cronulla and Seal Rocks from late this evening, which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion.

⛔️ Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.

A Hazardous Surf Warning is also current.

A Severe Weather Warning for Heavy Rainfall and Damaging Winds has also been issued.

ℹ️ For all the latest warnings, please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings.

⚠️ The State Emergency Service and NSW Police Force Marine Area Command advise:

✅ Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.

✅ People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.

✅ Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.

✅ Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.

✅ Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.

✅ Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.

☎️ For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local NSW SES Unit on 132 500. In life threatening emergencies, call 000.

Last Sunday we had the pleasure of welcoming members of the community to the NSW SES Randwick unit for our hands-on storm preparedness workshop.

We showed them how to climb ladders safely to clean their gutters, properly fill, lay and dispose of sandbags, and how to trim branches to reduce risks of damage to property. They also enjoyed an exclusive tour of our SES vehicles and got a behind-the-scenes look at how we respond during emergencies🚨
