BOOK YOUR AFTER DARK GUIDED WALK AT MANLY DAM.

Most of the amazing creatures in Manly Warringah War Memorial Park are nocturnal. So it makes sense that the best time to view the wildlife is at night. This FREE guided walk with ecologist Juan Forero on 11th April will be a journey of discovery.

Tickets are limited. Please register via the link below.

"KEEPING MANLY DAM WILD" MATTERS.

It was great to have the support of Michael Regan (Independent MP for Wakehurst) in his latest Autumn Newsletter. His advocacy helped encourage the Environmental Protection Authority to direct some of the fine payment they gathered (from the pollution of Manly Creek) into environmental monitoring. We will know soon just how much the torrents of mud emanating from the new Forest High School build has impacted the Climbing Galaxias fish. Just a reminder that this is the only place in the entire Greater Sydney region where these Gondwanan relics survive(d). We hope that the EPA will additionally fund conservation initiatives in the park with the rest of the fine monies.

Meanwhile, as Michael suggests, please check out our Manly Dam Biodiversity project website for info on the amazing nature of this area. Plus "what's on" events and more. https://manlydambiodiversityproject.org

THE SCOURGE OF MICRO PLASTICS.

Recent studies have revealed that Manly Lagoon is one of the most polluted waterways in NSW. Manly Creek feeds into the lagoon (as does Brookvale Creek and Burnt Bridge Creek). Synthetic playing fields (a major source of micro pastics) have been newly laid at the new French Forest High in Allambie Heights-right at the top of the catchment.

Northern Beaches waterways are among the most polluted with microplastics in NSW.

THE BEAUTY OF FROGS.

When frog expert and advocate Dr Jodi Rowley (from the Australian Museum) agreed to guide some of our volunteers in a night time search for frogs we were excited. It turned out to be a beautiful evening of nature, conservation and conversation amongst kindred spirits in Manly Warringah War Memorial Park (Manly Dam). It was another reminder of why protecting this amazing area of natural habitat is so vitally important. Thank you Jodi, thank you volunteer team and thank you Mar Tristan for the lovely images. Let us know if you want to be involved in conservation volunteering. And don't forget to download the Australian Museum FrogID App if you're interested in helping to assist in the survival of frogs https://www.frogid.net.au

A CRITICAL MOMENT FOR SYDNEY'S GREEN SPACES ( Submissions close 27th Feb)

The "Sydney Plan" will guide how the NSW Government manages growth in the Sydney region over the next 20 years by which time it is forecast to grow more than 23 percent to accommodate an extra 1.2 million people.

The Blue-Green Grid (BGG) plan of connected parks, tree canopy and clean waterways is apparently coming to fruition as part of this and the ToTotal Environment Centreis urging local environment groups and community members to register their views to the draft Sydney Plan so that the BGG is enforceable, protected from state and private developers, and delivered in full for current and future generations.

Our city – and present and future residents – must have adequate parks and trees for a healthy and sustainable life. And our unique wildlife must continue to co-exist. Green spaces are also essential to combat urban heat and the impact of climate change.

Check out the TEC's recommendations via the link and please make your own submission

JOIN THE PROTEST IN MANLY AGAINST KRILL OIL SALES.

The Save Manly Dam group has a charter to help protect our environment, not just locally, but wherever we can have a positive impact.

On the 3rd of February there will be a "National Day of Action" to highlight the damage overfishing for krill in Antarctica causes. Krill is a major food source for whales, seals and penguins but huge amounts are processed into krill oil and sold as a health supplement in outlets around Australia, despite harmless alternatives being available.

One of our team has put their hand up to organise a protest on behalf of the Bob Brown Foundation outside Chemist Warehouse on Manly Corso from 7.45am to 9am on that day and they'd love you to join them. (Chemist Warehouse is a major retailer of Swisse Blackmores GoHealth and other branded krill oil products).

Please register via this link. https://swissekrills.org/national-day-of-action-for-krill/ -action

If you can't attend there are other actions you can take via that same link.

Great news Wakehurst!

After sustained community advocacy about sediment pollution from the new Forest High School development, I’m pleased to confirm the EPA will conduct a fish survey at manly dam.

The survey will commence around March with a focus on the endangered climbing galaxias, comparing numbers to the 2024 survey.

This follows the EPA issuing a $30,000 fine to the contractor of the development for inadequate sediment controls, with community pressure helping ensure real environmental outcomes locally.
I look forward to the results of the survey which will influence our next steps in protecting Manly Dam.
