Night Tiger Takes a Bite! 🐍😂

This brown tree snake (night tiger) wasn’t too happy with me moving him off the road and decided to have a little chew. Brown tree snakes are mildly venomous and are rear fanged colubrids. In the Top End, these animals are often referred to as night tigers for obvious reasons. Such cool snakes, and always a privilege to encounter them!

🚨Illegal Reptile Caught in Sydney, Australia

This was a big surprise. I got a phone call close to midnight thinking it was going to be another standard snake callout, but instead it turned into an escaped exotic pet, a Central American boa.

Unfortunately, snakes like these have been bred illegally on the black market in Australia for many years. While they’re incredible animals, they simply don’t belong in our ecosystems.

When an exotic snake like this is found, it must be handed over to the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) as it poses a potential risk to our native biodiversity if it were to escape or establish in the wild.

Sadly, zoos generally won’t take these animals for numerous reasons, and releasing them is obviously not an option. As a result, they are humanely euthanised by veterinarians.

It’s a heartbreaking ending for an animal that did absolutely nothing wrong. But we also have to look at the bigger picture and protect Australia’s unique wildlife.

A sad outcome nonetheless.

An adult Stephens banded snake from a warm night a few months back. These beautiful snakes are highly venomous and belong to the same genus as the pale-headed snake and the broad-headed snake. They also grow noticeably larger than both, with adults often reaching well over a metre in length.

Have you ever seen a Stephens banded snake in the wild? 🐍

Guess the snake!

A couple of hints:
It’s a venomous Australian elapid #.
They are commonly mistaken for a juvenile or small brown snake, leading to plenty of misidentifications.
