Snakes are closer than you think…

A client recently called me after spotting a snake disappearing into a retaining wall in his backyard.

He knew the snake had been there, but while going through his phone afterwards, he realised something pretty incredible. he had taken these photos of his daughter playing in the garden, and the snake was right there in the background the whole time.

The snake was only a few metres away from his daughter, with their dog also wandering around nearby. And somehow, nobody noticed it.

The snake didn’t chase, strike, or show any aggression. As soon as it detected movement getting closer, it simply retreated back into the retaining wall and tried to get away.

I was later able to locate and safely catch the snake.

Situations like this are a great reminder that snakes are often much closer to us than we realise. Even when people, dogs and snakes are sharing the same backyard, the snake’s first instinct is to avoid us rather than confront us.

They don’t want to interact with people. they just want to be left alone.

And sometimes, they’re sitting only metres away completely unnoticed.

This red bellied black snake decided the living room was the perfect place to hide… right behind the shoe rack! 😂

The owners had no idea it was there until they spotted it, and when I arrived, it was tucked away behind the shoes with very little room to work with.

After carefully getting it out from behind the rack, this beautiful snake was safely removed and relocated from the house.

Another day, another unexpected place to find a snake!

Like I always say with brown snakes but most Australia’s snakes are REALLY variable in colour/patterning. Perfect example with this eastern brown that Snake Catcher Dan caught. If you look at colours alone you wouldn’t even think it is a brown snake.

Don’t make this mistake!!

With snake season just around the corner, I thought I’d remind you all about something that happens way too often, and it can have catastrophic consequences.

Believe it or not, the snake in this video is an Eastern Brown Snake, the 2nd most venomous snake in the world.

This snake was caught by a member of the public inside their living room. After picking it up and placing it into a container, they called me and sent me a photo.

My response?

“Mate… you are incredibly lucky you weren’t bitten.”

One wrong move and this could have ended very differently.

And that’s without even getting into the legal side of things. In Australia, catching or handling native wildlife without the appropriate licence or permit is illegal.

So please, if you find a snake:

Inside your house: Give it space, keep everyone away and call a licensed snake catcher.

Outside in the backyard: Leave it alone. In most cases, it will move on by itself. If you want it relocated, call a licensed snake catcher.

Please don’t try to catch, handle or remove it yourself. It’s simply not worth the risk.

How curious does this tree snake look? 😂

This guy got into some serious mischief crossing the road in front of my car and somehow ended up coming through my windscreen a few moments later. Things that only happen to me 😂

Thankfully, he was completely uninjured and was safely put back into the bush.

This is what we call a blue phase Common Tree Snake. They’re incredibly variable in colour, and this has to be one of the best looking ones I’ve come across while herping around FNQ!

How cool is he? 🐍

Finding the WORLDS most venomous snake, the inland taipan! 🐍

It’s hard to explain the feeling of spotting an inland taipan in the wild after searching for them for so many hours. Once you reach their habitat, you understand why these snakes spend most of their lives down in the cracks in the soil, only emerging for short periods.

It gives you a whole new appreciation for these incredible animals and how they’ve adapted to live and thrive in such extreme conditions!

Did you know? 👀

The belly patterns of Thorny Devils are unique to each individual, kind of like a fingerprint!

Researchers can actually use these patterns to identify individual Thorny Devils in the wild. How cool is that?

These little guys are seriously one of Australia’s most unique reptiles.

This one was moved safely off the road in South Australia earlier this year.

How amazing are Thorny Devils? 🥹🇦🇺

Stunning Common Tree Snake from South Sydney!

Common Tree Snakes are nonvenomous and mainly specialise in frogs and skinks. This house backed onto a creek, so this little guy was relocated into the same creek system just a few hundred metres down the road. How good is that? 🙌

Most of the Common Tree Snakes I see around South Sydney are much brighter and greener, but this one was quite dark. They’re another species that can be surprisingly variable in colour!

I was starting to miss the phone ringing 😂 How good is the warm weather back!

Snakes are moving! Springs in the air! How good is it? Phone wouldn’t stop ringing today, this was the first red belly of the day from Bonnet bay in the Sutherland shire!
