We met a citizen who captured a wonderful image of Cpl Pittman and Ace during one of their patrols of the Barton Creek Greenbelt! It’s a great depiction of how versatile and valuable Mounted Patrol is to our department and its ability to have a presence throughout all areas of the city. ⁣

We make a point to patrol parks, trails, and many other places that are not easily accessible by officers who patrol in vehicles or on foot to ensure that all of Austin is safe 💙⁣

APD mount Alex is officially retired from the Austin Police Mounted Unit after 6 years of service! ⁣

It is always our goal for our horses to enjoy a happy and healthy life after their retirement. Unfortunately Alex has had some chronic medical issues that have rendered him unfit for duty, so it’s time for him to hang up his badge. ⁣
⁣
We found the best retirement home for Alex with a family who also owns another one of our previous mounts, and one of Alex’s old pasture mates, Breezy! 🤍 Not to mention the beautiful pasture he gets to live in now! ⁣
⁣
Alex is the sweetest horse and his size & color made him a crowd favorite! He will be greatly missed by our department and by the City of Austin. Enjoy your retirement Alex! 💙⁣

ACVO and Epicure Pharma came out today to give our horses their free annual eye exam! Thank you so much for helping us keep our horses are healthy and fit for duty! 👀💙 ⁣

Every May, ACVO works with local animal ophthalmologists to provide free ocular screening eye exams to qualified Service & Working Animals!! We are so grateful for this program and the wonderful team that helps ensure our horses are fit for duty. ⁣

They even completed eye exams on three of our retired mounts, Galizur, Dusty and Zodiac 💙💙
