As we wrap up 2024, the Live Music Office (LMO) is taking a moment to reflect on what has been an incredible year of growth, engagement, and development for our small but mighty team. We’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of our most important partners and stakeholders, and we want to share a few highlights with you – because we couldn’t have done it without you!

At the heart of our work is a commitment to seeing live music thrive across Australia. This means advocating for better government regulation and strategic policy development across Federal, State and Local sectors to support our music communities. But, as we know, meaningful change requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-industry approach. While we play a facilitation role, the real magic happens thanks to the day-to-day champions across the government and industry who are driving this change.

Here’s just a small snapshot of what our 2024 entailed:

🔹 National delivery of Live and Local
🔹 Micro-Festivals
🔹 Professional Development Workshops:
🔹 Live Music Industry Forums
🔹 Strategic Policy Development
🔹 Industry Engagement
🔹 Policy Advisory
🔹 Team Growth

And there’s so much more to come in 2025! We’re excited to continue our engagement with local, state, and federal government representatives and to keep delivering best-practice live music policies nationwide.

A massive thank you to our incredible partners – .aus, , Griffith University, our local council partners, state music organisations, and the dedicated policy consultants who’ve supported us every step of the way.

Here’s to another year of making a real impact in live music! 🎶

We’re celebrating AND the end of an enormous year of Live and Local by sharing some snapshots from the incredible micro-festival events that our partner councils have delivered across 2024. It’s been an amazing 12 months seeing so many talented grassroots musicians perform in their own communities across Australia, and we’re excited to see even more live and local music take place in 2025.

What a wonderful weekend in Cairns with and for the Cairns Music Industry Gathering! It was great to facilitate discussions around what a thriving live music scene looks like for the Cairns community, how council and community would realistically achieve that vision and what skills, training and education provided by QMusic would help them get there.

The LMO celebrates the successful campaign by British grassroots organisation has that has secured a landmark policy change in the UK which will see a portion of every ticket sold at arenas and stadiums directed towards supporting grassroots music venues, artists, and promoters.

This initiative is ultimately a recognition that the success of that live music industry is founded upon a functioning grassroots ecology.

The LMO joins other industry organisations in endorsing a similar approach in Australia, along with a broad-based tax rebate for live music. There is, after all, no industry without the grassroots.

🎉 Big news alert! 🎉 The Live Music Office is thrilled to welcome Fiona Duncan to the team as the Live and Local Program Coordinator!

Fiona brings to the role over 30 years of music industry experience across artist management, event and tour management, publicity and industry advisory roles, as well as an extensive background in local government in Arts and Major Events at the City of Greater Geelong.

Fiona will be working with local councils across Australia to deliver the Live and Local program, a comprehensive capacity building program for local councils and their live music communities. Fiona said: “I’m deeply committed to supporting the industry, where grassroots development is crucial for nurturing artists and cultivating audiences, essential elements in the music industry ecosystem. Now more than ever, we recognise the vital importance of strengthening this foundation. I’m thrilled to join the Live Music Office, seeing immense value in their impactful work and I look forward to collaborating nationally with local governments.”

Engagement and Programs Manager Lucy Joseph said “It’s absolutely fantastic to welcome Fiona to the Live Music Office and expand our small but mighty team! With the addition of Fiona’s wealth of knowledge in both the music industry and local government to the LMO, we will be able to further advocate nation-wide for more consistent approaches to strengthening local grassroots live music communities as the foundations of the Australian music industry. We’re so excited to be part of the inaugural More Than A One Night Stand program being delivered in Warrnambool, with thanks to .aus, and !

More Than A One Night Stand is an extensive series of programs and events to support the return of triple j's highly anticipated One Night Stand, to be held this September in Warrnambool, Victoria / Gunditjmara, Eastern Maar Nations.

Recognising the significance of the event’s revival, Music Australia has assembled music service organisations AAM, Australian Independent Record Labels Association, APRA AMCOS, Crew Care, Kennell & Co, Music Victoria, The Push, the Live Music Office, Sounds Australia, and VMDO to engage with the local community and deliver bespoke industry-training programs, panel sessions, songwriting workshops and an industry forum leading up to One Night Stand.

These sessions unite key music organisations to harness our shared support for regional communities and provide capacity building and skills development initiatives for emerging artists and budding industry professionals.

The LMO is partnering with Warrnambool City Council to deliver the Live and Local program, beginning with a local industry forum on Thursday 12 September to bring council and the Warrnambool community together to discuss what a thriving live music scene looks like for the local industry following on from One Night Stand.
