Surfers Rescue 24/7 is an ocean water safety program teaching surfers how save lives!

440 flights have been logged by boardrider clubs across our State this year, with that number climbing every week as more pilots get trained and more clubs take delivery.

Over the past fortnight, the rollout headed south, with another group of boardrider clubs receiving drones delivered in honour of Mercury Psillakis.

One of those clubs was North Cronulla junior boardriders club where trained pilot Christian Hosick has already seen the impact.

"All the kids are pumped to see it hovering above. They feel safe in the water knowing we're watching from the beach."

So far, 32 of the 60 clubs set to receive drones in 2026 have taken delivery, with final rollouts planned across the state in the coming weeks.

"We're extremely proud to support our volunteer-run boardrider clubs with an important community asset that has the potential to save lives," said Surfing NSW's Matt Lawson.

The numbers are growing. The pilot network is growing. More importantly, the community behind it continues to grow too.

Every rollout means more trained pilots, more eyes on the water and more clubs building confidence in their ability to support surfing activity throughout the year.

As Merc's legacy continues to spread across the coastline, so does the willingness of clubs to step up for one another and help keep their communities safer in the water.

Over the weekend, phase one of our Surfers Rescue 24/7 drone program rolled out to boardrider clubs across the Northern Beaches, launched in honour of Mercury Psillakis and supporting community-led water safety.

Since 2022, 60 clubs across NSW have received drones and 91 pilots have been trained. This year, with support from NSW Government, another 60 drones will roll out across the boardriding community.

The goal is simple. Every club that wants drone capability should have access to it.

These drones give clubs an extra set of eyes during rounds, training and events. They help spot marine life early and support calm, informed decisions if something needs to change. They are not a replacement for patrols, but a tool for the times and places surfers are already in the water.

Each club also receives pilot training, with a focus on safe operation, identifying high-risk species and knowing when to pause or clear the lineup.

This program exists because of Merc. These drone kits are part of his legacy.

Each flight, each club round, and each watch over the lineup reflects the generosity and spirit of Merc’s family and the wider surfing community, turning loss into something that protects others.

May this equipment help keep surfers safe, and may Merc’s memory live on in the water he loved.

“Out of all the sessions I’ve done, this one was easily the most enjoyable and relevant. It focused on real-world scenarios that apply both in the clinic and in the surf,” said Steven Cryer from Cronulla Surf Academy.

Twenty surf coaches from across NSW came together in Cronulla this past weekend for the Surf Coach Essentials Course, a one-day intensive that lets coaches complete First Aid, CPR, and the Ocean Safety Award in half a day. The course also included Surfers Rescue 24/7 training and practical sessions on managing trauma and spinal injuries, giving coaches hands-on experience with real-life scenarios they face day-to-day.

By the end of the day, every coach walked away fully accredited and better equipped to keep their local beaches safe. It was incredible to see such a passionate crew stepping up as custodians of their communities!

Season’s greetings from the Humpbacks.

Let’s talk swim patterns. Most of the 40,000 Humpback whales currently migrating across our NSW coastline stick to the map and rather shallow waters, while many sharks ride the wild currents. From deep water, freshwater rivers to shallow coastal areas you’ll spot many sharks swaggering whole-of-body movements and whip like tails, except for bull sharks, which are arrow like and swim very straight.

For surfers, understanding and recognising the behaviour of marine animals can enhance their ocean experience and improve safety. It’s often like spotting that one mate in the lineup by their style before you even see their face.

Alongside swimming patterns, animals like sharks, dolphins, and rays can be identified by distinctive features, from their pectoral fins to their head, tail, and overall body shape.

With support from the DPI NSW Government and NSW Sharksmar ,Surfing NSW hold a drone program that significantly boosts safety and surveillance capabilities along the NSW coastline.

The drones, along with the training delivered to our clubs and communities, support shark surveillance during club rounds, help spot potential dangers in the ocean such as shark sightings, identify rips, and aid in rescues.

The knowledge and skills gained are no doubt invaluable.

Our trainer, Bobby Yaldwyn had an incredible depth of knowledge to share, but most importantly lived experience of ocean rescue situations that you just can’t fake.

If you spend time in or around ocean, this is a must. Period.
