🏠 Working together to support our community’s most vulnerable.

Last week in Goulburn the second of two professional forums about mental health, housing and homelessness was held to build greater understanding and strengthen partnerships between agencies and non-government organisations.

120 professionals who work with people in our community experiencing housing instability and/or mental health concerns, attended the forums at Goulburn on 28 May and in Bega on 14 May.

Southern's Mental Health and Housing Liaison Officer, Donna Campbell, has been working on collaborative activities across SNSWLHD to strengthen partnerships across the region. Donna’s expertise as a mental health clinician is supporting Homes NSW, NGOs, and other care partners, to understand mental health consumers with complex needs and assisting in securing and sustaining tenancies and mental health care for consumers.

“It’s about ensuring the entire ecosystem, including NSW Health, Homes NSW, and NGOs, have the structural ‘muscle’ to improve how we work together in the immediate, medium and longer term to achieve the best outcomes for our community,” Donna says.

Meet Ashleigh - Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at South East Regional Hospital, Bega.

Ashleigh was drawn to Emergency Nursing because of the fast-paced and unpredictable environment, along with the opportunity to make an immediate difference during critical moments of care.

"I've always had a huge interest in critical care and critical thinking," she says.

What she enjoys most is the strong teamwork within the multidisciplinary ED environment and the way staff come together to support patients when it matters most.

One moment that stands out for Ashleigh involved a patient who initially presented with mild symptoms before rapidly deteriorating in the ED. By recognising the changes early and escalating care quickly, the team was able to intervene and stabilise the patient.

"Seeing that patient improve reinforced how important vigilance and teamwork are in Emergency."

Ashleigh describes SERH as an inspiring place to work, with a team that is both supportive and rewarding to be part of.

And outside of work? Life on the Far South Coast offers the perfect balance. Ashleigh loves spending time with family, working on the farm, riding horses, and caring for sheep and cattle.

From beautiful beaches to rolling countryside, she says the South Coast lifestyle is something special.

🚧 Project Update: Big Milestones for Our New Eurobodalla Regional Hospital & Batemans Bay Community Health Centre

🚁 At Eurobodalla Regional Hospital, helipad construction is underway, complete with a covered walkway for safe, seamless patient transfers.

🚗 The new roundabout on the Princes Highway is nearing completion. Traffic management and reduced speed limits will remain while works are finalised - thank you to motorists and the community for your patience!

🌳 Landscaping is underway, with pathways and vibrant courtyards near maternity and reception coming to life and featuring rocks salvaged from the site.

The hospital is buzzing: the façade is finished, the main entry awning is going up, and teams are busy fitting out clinical and support areas.

Recent highlights include installation of new birthing baths in maternity and the completion of the ambulance bay roof.

The Furnishing, Fittings and Equipment team is finalising thousands of items to ensure the building is well equipped for staff, patients and visitors.

🏗️ Over at Batemans Bay Community Health, the roof is now complete - a major milestone! The exterior is coming together with window glazing and façade installation on-going, while inside, installation of services and wall sheeting is making the new spaces come alive.

💡Staff are actively planning for the transition, with a prototype room to be revealed soon.

Construction is set to wrap up in late 2026, followed by staff training and building commissioning before opening to the public.

Stay tuned for more updates—our new health facilities are on the way!

🗣️ Last shout to get involved and share what you know!

Research and clinical trials are still developing in our region, but they are important for improving healthcare over time. They can lead to better treatments, stronger local services, and more opportunities to access care closer to home.

As Southern builds our research capability, it’s important that our work reflects what matters most to our community. We want to understand your awareness, experiences and views.

Your feedback will help guide how research grows locally so that is relevant and accessible.

Please take a few minutes to complete our short survey and have your say ➡️ https://bit.ly/4taEoS5

‼️ Survey closes 5 June.‼️

We do not accept racism or unfair treatment. Hate and violence do not belong in our health system or our community.

In difficult times, we stand together and look after one another.

🐏 Judy Carmody is a country woman who lives and breathes farming. 🚜

Brought up in Boorowa – a small country town on the South West Slopes of NSW – and now living in Binalong in the Yass Valley, Judy knows the significant challenges that farmers and rural communities face every day.

As a coordinator for the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) Judy’s role is to increase mental health literacy in the community so that farmers can access the support they need, when they need it.

“Getting (support) to farmers is really difficult,” Judy says. “There’s often an attitude to ‘just get on with it’ and ‘work harder’ but genuine, confidential support is available.”

Judy has worked for RAMHP for ten years and says that just being a familiar face in the stock yards on sale day and attending community events, workshops and social get-togethers with farmers and their families is the best way to connect.

Farmers are very busy people.

“Farmers don’t just have drought, social isolation, rising costs of petrol and fertiliser to worry about,” Judy says. “Increasingly they’re experiencing the pressures of land acquisition projects for renewables that don’t just threaten their farming practices but their livelihoods too.”

Judy ensures that mental health support through RAMHP is visible and available where farmers are. Over ten years working with RAMHP, she has met with stock agents, landcare grazing groups and rural financial counsellors, to increase mental health literacy and she’s helped to reduce the stigma that can come with seeking support for mental health concerns or thoughts of su***de.

“It’s really important that people in rural communities who interact with farmers, know how to connect them with support when they think they might need it,” Judy says.
Judy provides support for communities in Yass Valley, Upper Lachlan, Goulburn Mulwaree and Queanbeyan Palerang and says it’s been tough for the last year.

“Thankfully recent rains in late May will carry the stock through until Spring,” Judy says.

Neil is a third generation farmer from Roslyn near Taralga and has experienced severe drought and the associated mental stress a couple of times. He runs around 3,000 Merino on his couple of thousand acres and makes a bit of extra cash fattening and selling on beef cattle when he has extra feed.

It was a full house at Bicentennial Hall, Queanbeyan to mark Reconciliation Week.

With the raining bucketing down, the traditional Reconciliation Walk moved inside, with school children joining with other members of the community, including staff from Southern NSW Local Health District, to renew our commitment to reconciliation and Closing the Gap.

This year's event coincided with the launch of Southern's own Reconciliation Action Plan ➡️ https://bit.ly/4uThqQN

🔴 💛 ⚫ Southern NSW Local Health District is proud to announce the launch of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

We recognise that for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, historical barriers have made accessing healthcare settings difficult. Southern is on a very purposeful and focused path to change that.

Developed over 18 months alongside our staff and Aboriginal communities, this RAP is our transparent commitment to embed cultural safety, grow our Aboriginal workforce, and build stronger partnerships of respect with the communities we serve.

We want every person who walks through our doors to feel heard, valued, safe, and to receive the very best care.
