Calling all senior students!

I’m excited to share that the My First Speech competition for 2026 is now open.
This fantastic national program invites students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to step into the shoes of a newly elected Member of Parliament and deliver a 3-minute speech on an issue they are passionate about.

It is a great opportunity to learn about our Parliament, have your voice heard, and build confidence in public speaking.

🏆 Winners from each year level will receive an expenses-paid trip to Canberra with a guardian to present their speech live at Parliament House. It is an incredible experience.
📝 Find out more and submit your entry here- www.aph.gov.au/mfs
⏰ Entries close 11:59pm AEST, Monday 20 July 2026

Connection matters. 💛

That’s why the Australia Post Community Grants program is now open, supporting local not-for-profit organisations that help people in our Bass community stay connected and mentally well.

Grants of up to $10,000 are available, with an additional $250,000 dedicated to projects supporting mental wellbeing in disaster-impacted communities.

I encourage all Bass community groups to apply, please share this with a local organisation doing great work or tag them in the comments to make sure they know.

Today, like so many Tasmanians, I am thinking of Professor Richard Scolyer AO, and of the family, friends, colleagues and communities who loved him.

Richard’s story reached the whole country, but it began here, locally.

Before he became one of the world’s leading melanoma researchers, before he helped change the future for thousands of patients, before he became Australian of the Year, he was a northern Tasmanian kid. A Riverside High student. A son, a brother, and a proud supporter of Bridgenorth Football Club, a club connected to his family for generations.

That beginning helped shape him.

Because for all his brilliance, what so many people remember about Richard is not only what he achieved, but how he carried himself. Curious. Brave. Generous. Humble. Determined to use whatever time and knowledge he had to help someone else.

His work in melanoma research helped save lives. Then, when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, Richard did something almost impossible to comprehend. He chose to keep contributing. He became a patient, but he also kept being a scientist, an advocate and a source of hope.

He shared the hardest parts of his journey with remarkable honesty. Not because it was easy, but because he knew it might help the next person, the next family, the next breakthrough.

That is an extraordinary legacy.

My thoughts are with Richard’s wife Katie, his children, his parents Jenny and Maurice, his brother Mark, his colleagues, and everyone at Bridgenorth and across northern Tasmania who knew him not as a national figure, but as Richard.

We are proud that one of our own changed the world.

May we honour him by backing science, supporting medical research, caring for each other, and carrying forward his courage to always give it a crack.

📢 Community Notice: AusAlert Test in Launceston

Residents of Launceston are advised that our community has been selected to participate in testing AusAlert, the Australian Government’s new national emergency warning system.

⏰ When: 11:00am, Monday 15 June 2026

During this time, you may receive a test alert on your mobile phone, tablet, or smart watch. The alert will appear as a notification and will be accompanied by a loud, siren-like sound and vibration lasting approximately 10 seconds.

Please note:

This is a planned test only, there is no cause for concern and no action is required.
You may receive the alert even if your phone is in use or on silent mode.
Not all devices will receive the alert, which is expected.

AusAlert is being introduced to deliver fast, reliable warnings during emergencies such as bushfires, floods, and other critical incidents, helping to keep communities informed and safe.

If you are driving when the alert is received, please remain calm and do not interact with your device until it is safe and legal to do so.

For further information, please visit: ausalert.gov.au

We encourage all residents to be aware of this test and to share this information within the community.

Today’s news that LION has made the decision to close its Boag’s brewery in Launceston at the end of the year is devastating news for the 42 workers and for the community of Northern Tasmania.

The brewery has long been central to Launceston life - and I thank LION for their commitment to consult with the affected workers, to find redeployment opportunities and for looking at setting up a reskilling and community fund.

I am pleased to see that Boag’s Brewhouse will remain open, and that the company will work closely with all levels of Government about the future of the brewery site.

This is very difficult news for the community. The Albanese Government stands by workers and expects LION to honour all entitlements for all affected workers. Retrenched workers will have access to supports offered through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to assist in finding new employment as quickly as possible.
