At approximately 10pm last night, we were called out to a smoking service fuse box on the side of the house. Thankfully the owners knew there was something not quite right when they noticed that the power was flickering in the house and went out to check the meter box and discovered that the box on the side of their house was smoking (this connects power from the street to your house). Thankfully this fire was caught early and it didnt spread any further than the box. We called in Romsey Fire Brigade with their Low Voltage Removal kit and they check the meter box to ensure all power to the house was isolated and attempted to remove the smoking fuse from the box, which unfortunately as it was being taken out the fuse snapped off and stayed in the box. Powercor were called to come and resolve the issue. This is a timingly reminder that these things can happen and if you see smoke or flames too immediately call 000, please don't be worried about getting us out in the cold, it's what we're here to do.
Also thanks to Bolinda-Monegeetta CFA for turning out, thankfully they were not needed.

The AusAlert national test will be taking place on the 27th of July at 2pm AEST - to help all people be prepared for what the test will look and sound like, there is some extra information for community members 📲
Emergencies can create additional challenges for people living with disability.
AusAlert sends near-instant emergency messages to compatible mobile devices like phones, tablets and smart watches.

AusAlerts use sound, vibration and on-screen messages to get your attention.
Alerts may include a loud, 10-second siren-like sound that may be distressing for some people, including those with sensory sensitivities.

AusAlert has developed a range of resources tailored for people living with disability to help explain what AusAlert is, so you’ll know what to expect when an alert is sent out, find these resources here, https://www.ausalert.gov.au/community-resources/disabilities-extra-support

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest
technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile
devices.
It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we
need to test the system across Australia.

On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones,
tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The test times across Australian time zones are:
• 2:00 pm AEST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS)
• 1:30 pm ACST (SA, NT, Broken Hill NSW)
• 12:00 pm AWST (WA)

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that
lasts about 10 seconds. If this could disrupt you or cause you or
a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or
switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in
your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual
disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and
others safe.

SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES

Not all of our call outs are to fight fires. At Glenlyon CFA we’re also about preventing them.

CFA's free smoke detector installation program is available for residents in Darraweit Guim and surrounds for folk who need a hand. If you, or someone you know has no smoke alarms, alarms that are old, or alarms that have stopped working, our brigade will come out and install new ones, free of charge.

It's aimed especially at older residents, people living on their own, and anyone for whom getting up a ladder or buying and fitting an alarm just isn't easy.

Did you know most home fire deaths happen at night, while people are asleep. When you’re sleeping you can’t smell smoke and a working smoke alarm is what wakes you in time to get out. With heaters and electric blankets all getting more use through a cold Central Victorian winter, now is the time to ensure your home is covered and you and your family are safe. Having a working smoke detector in your bedroom is strongly recommended.

Do you know someone who could use this? Send us a message here on the page and we'll get back to you to arrange a visit.

Today we joined Clarkefield Fire Brigade, Bolinda-Monegeetta CFA, Springfield Fire Brigade and Romsey Fire Brigade up at the Central Highlands training ground in Ballan. We were spilt into two groups running through different types of fire extinguishers and how to use a fire blanket. We then ran through different scenarios BA scenarios and car accident scenarios. After lunch we swapped over scenarios. At the end we came together for a petrol tanker on fire. All in all we learnt heaps today and as always had fun. Huge thanks to our instructors and our pad instructors for having us.
