First Christmas market for me at the Warburton Waterwheel. It’s been a while since I’ve done a market and wowser what can I say but thank you. Thank you to my local community for supporting me. I am humbled and delighted.

I met Moussa at Mansfield Market. He and his wife Victoire make the most amazing goats cheese and have a lovely farmgate in Winton near Benalla. I am very fortunate that they stock my Moreish as an addition to their cheese. If you are their way pop in and indulge yourself.

My Orange Blossom and Saffron Syrup gives this orange cake a flavour pop. The syrup can also be added to pancakes, poached fruit, ice cream and a cocktail base to name a few. I’m blessed to have two orange trees in my back yard that provide me each year with abundant fruit. The orange blossom smell brings me much happiness.

For some time, the Greek Island of Santorini, known to the Minoan civilisation as Thera, was considered to be the original source of wild saffron because of a series of wall frescoes unearthed there in the Akrotiri settlement. Encapsulated and preserved in volcanic lava and ash from a late Bronze Age volcanic eruption on the island, the wall paintings depict women and monkeys picking saffron under the guidance of a goddess. Texts and archaeological evidence from Akrotiri indicate that saffron was used heavily in perfumes and for medicinal purposes, notably those for women and girls. Scholars have speculated that the representations of saffron as most related to women in this Bronze Age society might mean that women were the primary tenders of the plant and claimed the majority of knowledge and utilisation of its prized stigmas. The attention given to the crocus in these paintings and the presence of a goddess (the gods were considered responsible for the provision of medicine and physic in Minoan culture) indicates its value for religious and medicinal purposes.
