Thank you to Uncle Jimmy Smith for generously sharing your time, stories and knowledge on the City of Sydney's Green Square Aboriginal Cultural Walk as part of Reconciliation Week.

Charlie and Natalie came back to the office full of stories about eggs, stars, sustainable practices and all the native plants growing around Green Square.

They learned about how plants have been used for healing, caring for babies, treating sores and cuts, and supporting everyday life.

This afternoon, Waterloo 2050 alum Eliza spoke with residents at the Save Waterloo Encampment about the realities of relocation.

She asked residents how they feel about leaving their community, what the next stage of the redevelopment looks like for them, and whether they feel supported through the process.

Keep an eye out for Eliza’s piece in the upcoming edition of Inner Sydney Voice magazine.

This National Reconciliation Week, we are All In for taking action to make change.

Reconciliation is not a passive activity. It asks us to listen, learn, show up, and take responsibility in the everyday work of building fairer communities.

At Inner Sydney Voice, that means continuing to centre truth-telling, self-determination, justice and place-based advocacy in our work across the region, including Heatwave Workshops Namatjira Place, joining City of Sydney's Aboriginal Cultural talks at Green Square, and Reconciliation art activities at our local playgroup.

If you can’t join us, we also encourage you to spend time with First Nations-led resources and organisations, including The Common Ground Foundation, The Uluru Statement from the Heart, and SNAICC-National Voice for our Children’s 'All In Starts Early 'campaign.

Reconciliation Australia has also shared practical ways to take action as an individual, in workplaces, schools and communities, from reading and watching First Nations stories, to sharing resources with colleagues, supporting campaigns, and moving beyond words through a Reconciliation Action Plan.

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June.

Sweltering Cities spoke to renters in the Inner City of Sydney about whether rental properties should have minimum energy efficiency standards 💭 The answer on everyone’s lips? HELL YES!! 🔥

"Whether it’s baking hot rentals in rising heat, unaffordable electricity bills, or the need for basic features like air conditioning and fly screens, renters know exactly what standards their rental needs to meet to ensure they are safe and healthy"

Are you a renter and want to add to this conversation? Head to the Sweltering Cities Instagram and ➡️ Comment “renter” and they will hook you up with all you need to make a comment in the Minimum Energy Efficiency Rental Standards submission!

Congratulations to Eliza!

Last week’s Don’t Sweat It DBU workshop at Redfern St George Community Housing was a special one.

Eliza, one of our Waterloo 2050 youth filmmaking participants, stepped into a new role... co-facilitating her first community mentoring session alongside DBU Peer Community Educator Lan.

Together, they worked with SGCH and Homes NSW tenants to share practical tips on staying safe, cool and connected during extreme heat.

The room was full of participation and community knowledge, with some residents translating on their phones to make sure everyone could take part. Feedback showed that everyone got something out of the session, and one older community member said it had inspired him to advocate in his own community.

A huge thank you to Lan for supporting Eliza so generously as she builds her confidence and skills. Eliza now has the capacity to lead her own session and we can’t wait to see what she does next.

Congratulations to all the volunteers celebrated at this year’s Inner-City Volunteer Awards from Counterpoint Community Services! 👏👏👏

Now in its 20th year, the Awards recognise the incredible skills, care and contributions of individuals, community groups, social housing tenant representatives and organisations supporting inner-city communities.

We were especially proud to see volunteers from Inner Sydney Voice recognised, including our Digital Mentors, Waterloo 2050 film mentors, and Done By Us Peer Community Educators.

Across very different projects, these volunteers share something powerful: they give their time, knowledge and lived experience to strengthen community connection.

From supporting older residents to build digital confidence, to mentoring young filmmakers, to helping neighbours prepare for heatwaves, their contributions show the real value of community-led work.

This year’s national theme is “Your Year To Volunteer” and these volunteers are a wonderful reminder of what becomes possible when people step forward to support their communities.

Congratulations to everyone nominated and celebrated. Your work matters.

Last week, Lan ran a fantastic 'Don’t Sweat It' workshop with Inner West Housing in Pyrmont.

Drawing on her own lived experience, Lan led a highly interactive session that supported residents to think practically about heatwave preparedness, staying cool, recognising heat stress, and looking out for neighbours during extreme heat.

It was a great example of peer-led community education in action: local knowledge, shared experience and practical strategies coming together to help communities prepare for hotter days ahead.
