At 17:49 this afternoon, we were alerted to reports of a house fire on Pitt Town Ferry Rd Wilberforce. Both our trucks were on scene within minutes, locating a two storey house with a fire in the garage which had already spread to the upper floor.

We were initially supported by Davidson Rural Fire Brigade and Hill Rural Fire Brigade, who were luckily passing through on their way home from a Hazard reduction burn in Colo, before other local RFS and FRNSW brigades arrived soon after.

Whilst the occupants weren’t home at the time and are safe, sadly two pet dogs perished in the fire.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.

Our members have been kept on their feet the past few days supplying crews for hazard reduction (HR) burns, while also maintaining a local prescence to respond to Triple Zero calls when required. We've been a bit busier than usual, especially with many nearby brigades committed to important HR burns, but our members have risen to the challenge - attending 10 incidents and supporting at two hazard reduction burns in a span of 32 hours.

Sunday 12/04:
Hazard Reduction burn at Kurrajong Heights - Two of our members crewed Upper Colo's ultra-light tanker to assist with patrolling the fire.
Hazard Reduction burn at Lower Portland - After patrolling for a few hours, our crew was diverted to assist with another hazard reduction closer to home.
MVA (Motor Vehicle Accident) at East Kurrajong - Called off en route as other crews were in the area close by the incident.
Backyard fire at Wilberforce - Rubbish being burnt off was located and extinguished.
MVA persons trapped at Freemans Reach - Our crew assisted NSW SES, Police and Ambulance by providing fire protection while they worked to free the trapped driver.
Bush and grass fire in Windsor - Our heavy tanker responded from station and arrived to find a fire burning under the Fitzroy Bridge in Windsor. Two fires were found and extinguished with the help of additional crews from 081 Windsor, Ebenezer, Hawkesbury HQ and 082 Richmond.
MVA fluid on road in South Windsor - While packing up from the fire, our truck was requested to assist Hawkesbury HQ with an MVA. We were called off en route due to the incident being resolved sooner than expected.
Pile burn in Freemans Reach - Our crew attended and extinguished an oversized pile burn.
Bush fire in Cattai - Our volunteers assisted Hillside and Oakville brigades in extinguishing an escaped pile burn.
HR in Lower Portland - Simultaneously, a relief crew of two of our members were out patrolling for any hotspots at the earlier hazard reduction until late in the evening.

Monday 13/04:
Alarm operating in Wilberforce - Our brigade attended a fire alarm at a local business in the early hours of Monday morning, no fire was found after an extensive search.
Grass fire in South Windsor - A crew on our heavy tanker arrived just after 082 Richmond and assisted them in extinguishing an escaped pile burn.
Bush fire in East Kurrajong - Our heavy tanker and pumper responded to an escaped pile burn that had gone down a steep escarpment, alongside East Kurrajong and Glossodia brigades.

We'd like to thank the following brigades and agencies we worked with the past few days for their professionalism and teamwork, who are just some of many within our local area we have the honour of working with:

Noticed some smoke in the air? Firefighters from the NSW RFS and National Parks along with supporting agencies have been taking advantage of favourable conditions to conduct essential hazard reduction (HR) burns.

Five of our volunteers attended the Paulls HR at South Maroota yesterday afternoon - supplying a crew in our heavy tanker plus a strike team leader and crew leader to assist another brigade. Working with many brigades from across Greater Sydney they were able to sucessfully conduct a low intensity burn.

Interested in joining? Becoming a volunteer with the RFS is a great way to learn new skills, find new friends and help your community. Our brigade is very active with structure and house fires, bush and grass fires, motor vehicle accidents and many more - our volunteers have attended around 120 calls in just 6 months! If you'd like to know more about joining, please send us a message. In about two or three months of weekly training you could be on the truck!

A very long day for our crew today - after a 5am wakeup call to power lines down and subsequently a few local tree issues, we were back at station conducting some maintenance when we were alerted to a house fire in Cattai at around 1pm.

Wilberforce Pumper responded and arrived shortly after Oakville Rural Fire Brigade and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 081 Windsor. to a two storey house with heavy fire involvement in the garage which very rapidly spread to the top floor and roof space.

Additional units were responded from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 83 Riverstone, Freemans Reach Rural Fire Brigade, NSW RFS - Box Hill Nelson Brigade and Hawkesbury Headquarters Rural Fire Brigade whilst crews attempted an agressive fire attack, however were hindered by large parts of the building collapsing around them. Wilberforce Pumper was put to work drawing water from a nearby lagoon and sending it up a hill and around 200m away to the trucks tasked with attacking the fire.

Thankfully all occupants of the home managed to escape safely, however the house and contents suffered very heavy fire and structural damage, with machinery used to render the site safe.

**UPDATE** RFS units have now departed scene with traffic controllers taking over the road closure. At the time of posting the road was still closed. Advice from Endeavour Energy was that additional crew and equipment is needed to make the site safe and due the high volume of callouts for them overnight this may not be available until after 11am.

****

Putty Rd is currently closed in both directions between Uworra Rd and Morilla Rd, due to a fallen tree and live high voltage powerlines down across the road.

Please avoid the area and use an alternate road as we are unable to allow any traffic through. No ETA at this time.

2025 has been an even busier year for us than last year - our volunteers attended over 178 incidents in support of the Wilberforce community and beyond. 43 of those calls were within our brigade area, with the other 135 calls assisting other brigades.

This past year has also seen many requests for our crew to attend Hazard Reduction burns, Strike Team requests and not to mention our weekly training and maintenance to keep everything running smoothly. Towards the end of the year we recieved a new appliance, Wilberforce Pumper, which has been a fantastic addition to the brigade. This also meant we had to say goodbye to our well-loved light tanker, which is now in service at another brigade in the Blue Mountains. Our brigade also placed second overall at the Hawkesbury District Championships to end off the year on a high.

Our brigade members have continually stepped up to answer the call when needed, at all hours and at short notice. We're very proud of their commitment to the brigade and community, and also would like to extend a massive thanks to their families for the work they do in supporting them to volunteer.

Not sure of a New Years resolution just yet? Have a think about becoming a volunteer firefighter, as the photos show there's a lot more to it than just putting out fires! Our brigade has a couple of new members due to start training early this year, if you've been considering it or would like to know a bit more before jumping in, please send us a message!
