🪶 WAMRG Volunteer Recognition Event 🪶 22nd Feb 2026

Thank you to all our volunteers over the years for organising events, collecting and managing data and trudging through the bush to monitor mounds. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and keeping this group going 💚

A special thank you to guest speakers PhD candidate Natalie Grassi for presenting her research, and Nell Glover from Australian Wildlife Conservancy for talking about the influence of predator control on malleefowl at Mt Gibson Sanctuary. Thanks to Liz Kington for speaking about the work the National Malleefowl Recovery Group is doing this season, and to Jude Comfort for discussing the volunteer survey results.

This event was able to run thanks to Harriet Davie for organising, and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions - Parks and Wildlife funding the event.

✨️Another Ongerup muster weekend complete ✨️

The team monitored 179 mounds over 2 days.
Corackerup: 10 active out of 78 mounds (8 active in 2024)
Peniup: 5 active out of 54 mounds (4 active in 2024)
Red Moort Reserve: 9 active out of 47 (same as 2024)

We also got to hear an exciting presentation from PhD candidate Natalie Grassi about habitat fragmentation, feral predator diets and a new malleefowl project in the Fitz-Stirling region.

Thank you to Bush Heritage Australia for letting us stay at the amazing Red Moort Field Station. Sadly, there were no shower frogs this year.. 🐸 We'd love to come back and check for frogs (and malleefowl) next year 💚

📽 A special thank you to Sophie Madaffari for creating this video using everyone’s photos

After monitoring at Dalwallinu, another team (Allan, Wendy, Tom, Leanne, Harriet and Maryann) went to Australian Wildlife Conservancy's Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary.

Inside the feral predator-proof fenced exclosure there were 17 active out of 38 mounds, compared to 7 active out of 25 mounds in the area monitored outside the fence.

Our dedicated WAMRG Chairperson who organised this monitoring, Allan, would like to thank Tom for putting up with him losing his radio and having to backtrack (twice!). It’s definitely time for a holiday Allan 🌞🍹
