4th Brigade - Australian Army

4th Brigade - Australian Army The official page of the Australian Army's 4th Brigade. The 4th Brigade (4 Bde) is a brigade-level formation of the Australian Army.

The brigade mission is to command assigned units of 4 Bde to enable provision of specified individual and collective capabilities to support, sustain and reinforce Army's Operational Force.

4 Bde was originally formed in September 1914 for service during World War One; elements of the brigade served at Gallipoli and in the trenches on the Western Front before being disbanded in 1919. In 1921, the

brigade was re-raised as a unit of Australia's part-time military forces, based in the state of Victoria. During World War II the brigade served in the New Guinea and New Britain campaigns. Following the war, the brigade formed part of the 3rd Division, however, it was later reallocated to the 2nd Division, where it now serves as a Reserve combined-arms formation including units and personnel from all corps of the Army including armoured, infantry, artillery, engineers, signals and ordnance. The 4th Brigade currently consists of the following units:
• 4th/19th Prince of Wales' Light Horse
• 22nd Engineer Regiment
• 108th Signals Squadron
• 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment
• 8th/7th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment
• Melbourne University Regiment; and
• 4th Combat Service Support Battalion. The brigade has contributed personnel to deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. It also continues to support Australia's commitment to Rifle Company Butterworth. Within Australia, the brigade's Reserve Response Force was deployed to provide assistance to the civil community during the 2009 Victorian bushfires, the 2011 floods, the 2019-20 Victorian bushfires and Operation COVID-19. Currently, the 4th Brigade is headquartered at Simpson Barracks in Melbourne. It consists of about 2,000 personnel, who are based in a number of locations in Melbourne and regional Victoria.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the incredible women who serve, support and inspire the next generation.

For Lance Corporal Melissa Ellis from Headquarters 4th Brigade, service has become a family tradition.

After nearly 20 years as a reservist in the Australian Army, Melissa recently watched her daughter, Olivia Nelson, enlist as a qualified mechanic in the Army, continuing a proud family connection to service.

“I’m incredibly proud of Olivia for taking this step and starting her own journey as a reservist in the Australian Army,” Melissa said.

“I think she would have seen that it’s brought a lot into my life and I’d like to think that I’ve shown her that it’s definitely a beneficial career path for women. I’m excited to see her build a career doing something she enjoys while also serving her community and country.”

Since enlisting in 2006, Melissa has contributed to a range of important domestic operations and activities, and says serving as a reservist has been both meaningful and rewarding. Seeing Olivia now begin her own Army journey is a moment of immense pride for the entire family.

Melissa hopes Olivia will continue to grow, develop and thrive in her career, and encourages other women and mothers to consider reserve service as a flexible and rewarding pathway alongside family life and civilian careers.

“Women can absolutely balance family commitments with service as a reservistin the Army, and it offers opportunities, friendships and experiences that are incredibly worthwhile,” Melissa said.

This Mother’s Day, we thank all the mothers, daughters and families who serve together, support one another and strengthen our Army community.

Members of the 4th Brigade proudly took part in Anzac Day marches in Melbourne and Hobart. In Melbourne, the Brigade was joined by the soldiers and officers of 108 Signal Squadron, marching to the Shrine of Remembrance. In Tasmania, our soldiers and officers from the 12th/40th Battalion, The Royal Tasmania Regiment also represented the Brigade, marching to the Queens Domain Cenotaph in Hobart.

Marching in formation, our soldiers not only represented the 4th Brigade, but the generations of Australians who have worn the uniform in service of the nation.

The march is a powerful reminder of past and present service, and the shared bond that unites those who serve.

For our people, Anzac Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made, recognise the responsibilities we carry, and uphold the values that define military service.

We are proud to stand among our fellow servicemen and women.

Lest We Forget.

Today, soldiers and officers from the 4th Brigade stood shoulder to shoulder with communities across Victoria and Tasmania, honouring the service and sacrifice of current and service personnel during Anzac Day dawn services.

Anzac Day holds deep meaning for all service personnel. It is a moment to reflect on the legacy we inherit, defined by courage, mateship, and selfless service, and how that remains in our own roles today.

We thank the communities who joined us this morning as we pause and pay tribute to current and former service personnel.

Lest We Forget.
