Dr. Kevin Greenidge Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados

23/04/2026

A leader is only as strong as the people who support him.

During a recent retreat for our administrative professionals, I shared a story that has always resonated with me: “Who’s packing your parachute?”

At the Central Bank of Barbados, our administrative team members are our parachute packers. They are the ones working behind the scenes, often out of the spotlight, performing the vital tasks that hold this institution together.

They are the strength in the fabric of our existence. Without their precision, their dedication, and their unwavering support, we simply could not do the work we do for Barbados.

To our administrative team, thank you for your excellence and for ensuring we all land safely every single day. Your impact is felt in every corner of the Bank.

I started this week in Washington with one priority in mind: making sure the decisions being shaped in these rooms translate into real progress for Barbados and the wider Caribbean.

From the very first meetings, the focus has been clear. We are pushing for delivery, not just discussion. Whether it is securing stronger support for small states, advancing investment across the region, or building more resilient financial systems, our role is to be present, prepared, and purposeful.

What matters most is what this means at home. More opportunity for businesses. Greater resilience in the face of shocks. And systems, like BiMPay, that make everyday transactions faster and more accessible for everyone.

This week is about ensuring that Barbados is not just part of the conversation, but helping to shape what comes next.

Yesterday, we formalised a partnership with the Barbados Association of Retired Persons to ensure that seniors are ready for BiMPay from day one.

Through this programme, participants will receive tablets, hands-on training, and continued support to learn how to send and receive money, scan QR codes, and use digital devices safely. The focus is practical: building confidence step by step so that no one feels left behind as the system rolls out.

BiMPay will make payments faster and simpler across Barbados, but it must also be accessible. This partnership ensures that seniors can participate fully, manage their finances independently, and stay connected in a digital economy.

Last week, we brought members of the media together for a closer look at BiMPay and what it means for Barbados.

We walked through how the system works, where we are in the rollout, and what needs to be completed as we move toward the June 16 go-live.

BiMPay is more than an app. It is a national payment system designed to make everyday transactions faster, easier, and more accessible for everyone.

As we move into the final phase, clear and accurate communication matters. The media plays an important role in helping Barbadians understand how BiMPay will work in practice and how it will fit into their daily lives.

This is a shift in how Barbados moves money. And we are getting ready to do it right.

At Brighton Farmers’ Market earlier this year with the BiMPay team, we met Errol Andrew, a craftsman building his business with skill and purpose. Today, he came to the Central Bank to present us with custom Central Bank leathercraft, a connection from that day, carried forward.

This is who BiMPay is for. Small businesses, entrepreneurs, people who need faster, simpler ways to get paid and grow. Because if it works for them, it works for Barbados.

On Friday, we officially handed over a new road tennis court to the children of the Nightingale Children’s Home, a simple but meaningful act made possible through the Kevin Greenidge Charitable Trust, in partnership with the Child Care Board, the Social Empowerment Agency, the President of Barbados, and the Professional Road Tennis Association.

President Lieutenant Colonel The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic and I shared the honour of opening the court. His reflections on the Chapman Challenge, honouring where you come from while uplifting those who follow, put moments like these into focus.

We placed more than raquets in their hands. Each one, along with the net, carried affirmations like “I am a champion”, “I am resilient”, and “I am strong”, quiet reminders of the strength already within them.

We went further than the court itself. We committed to a full three-month coaching programme, ensuring that they are supported with the skills, guidance, and discipline needed to grow. And yes, I gave them a challenge. Train hard, improve, and when I return, be ready to beat me.

What stood out most was them. Their excitement, their laughter, the way they took ownership of the space almost immediately. As the games began, the court filled with laughter, energy, and confidence.

This was never just about a court. It was about creating space for growth, and gently reminding each child that they are capable of more than they may yet realise.

Today, I welcomed the leadership of Sagicor Bank Barbados Limited to the Central Bank for a meaningful engagement, including an introduction to their newly appointed Chief Operating Officer, David Noel, and a discussion on the Bank's strategic direction following the formation of Sagicor Group Caribbean Limited.

Alongside Deputy Governors Michelle Doyle and Alwyn Jordan, and Banking Supervision Deputy Director Tamara Hurley, we met with CEO George Thomas and CFO Craig Hinds for a productive exchange on the evolving financial landscape and the role Sagicor Bank Barbados Limited continues to play in supporting growth and stability across the island.

A significant part of our conversation centred on BiMPay, including the Bank's readiness for go-live, strategies to drive adoption and scale, and how additional services can be layered onto the platform to enhance user experience, support credit expansion, and provide meaningful financial planning tools for small and medium-sized enterprises.

These engagements matter. They strengthen relationships, create alignment, and ensure that as our financial system evolves, it does so with clarity, collaboration, and a shared commitment to the people we serve.

The 13th Forerunners Forum brought together the Governors and Deputy Governors who helped build this institution, alongside the team now leading it forward. It was a moment to honour their contribution, recognise the strong foundation they laid, and affirm that their legacy continues to guide our next chapter.

This year, the future was not just discussed, it was demonstrated. Through live BiMPay demonstrations, we saw money move in seconds: request to pay, QR code scans, and instant transfers, all in real time.

It was a powerful reminder that transformation is no longer ahead of us, it is here. For people, for businesses, and for Barbados, the possibilities are real.

Past and present met with one shared purpose: to honour what was built and to carry it forward, together. Now, we are all BiMPay ambassadors.

Today I announced that BiMPay will go live on Friday, 12 June 2026.

The Central Bank’s infrastructure is built, tested, and ready. The additional time is to complete interoperability testing across all participating institutions to the standard a national payment system requires. June 12 is the date. Every institution that meets the required standard will be part of it.

When BiMPay launches, Barbadians will be able to move money instantly, at any time, to any account at any bank or credit union. The BiMPay wallet will mean that access to the payment system is not limited to those with a traditional bank account.

June 12. That is the date. It is firm.

Three years ago, I walked into the office of Governor knowing the work would be measured not by speeches, but by results.

We have made significant strides but perhaps what I’m most proud of is creating the kind of work environment that people want to work in. I love our team and our team loves serving you.

I remain grateful for the trust placed in this institution and fully committed to building a financial system that serves every Bajan.
