🛡️ Building Safer Spaces for Young People 🛡️

On Wednesday, May 27, the Youth Development Programme in the Division of Youth Affairs, Prime Minister's Office, hosted a Child Safeguarding Workshop for members of the Barbados Boy Scouts Association at Scout Headquarters, Hazelwood, Collymore Rock, St. Michael.

Facilitated by Mr. Carl Padmore, with support from Youth Commissioners Rachel Scott and Pius Emilien, the workshop focused on child rights, safeguarding, and harm prevention, key areas championed by UNICEF Barbados.

Chief Commissioner of the Barbados Boy Scouts Association, Mr. Trevor Jones, welcomed the initiative, noting its importance as the Association continues to educate its members on World Scouting's Safe from Harm framework, a global initiative designed to ensure that Scouting remains a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all.

The workshop was attended by Deputy Chief Commissioners Marva Cobham and Rev. Martin Taylor, along with senior members and Scout leaders from across the Association.

Participants described the session as informative, engaging, and highly relevant, and expressed their eagerness to participate in future safeguarding workshops.

Together, we are strengthening our commitment to protecting children and creating safe environments where young people can thrive.

🎬🎥 The next generation of storytellers is ready to create!

Students enrolled in the Digital Media Programme recently participated in an orientation session where they learned about the exciting journey ahead. The class begins on June 2nd, 2026 and runs for 6 months.

Mr. David Denny, Youth Projects Coordinator with the Division of Youth Affairs, shared the history and vision behind the programme, highlighting its growth and the opportunities it creates for young creatives. He encouraged students to bring energy, commitment, drive, and determination as they embark on this exciting learning experience.

Students were also inspired by Rahmat Jn-Pierre, class tutor, who shared his own journey in digital media and reminded participants that “we are all mirrors of the course” and learning from each other while developing their own passions and talents.

Participants received an overview of the programme, which covers:
🎥 Introduction to Film
📹 Cinematography
🎙️ Sound for Film
💡 Lighting for Film
✍️ Scriptwriting
🛠️ Production Tools
💻 Editing
🎬 Documentary & Short Film Production

The programme offers both morning and evening classes and can serve as a pathway to advanced studies at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination (EBCCI) at The University of the West Indies.

This year, students will also work towards major projects focusing on Road Tennis and Barbadian Heritage, showcasing their skills and creativity.

We look forward to seeing the amazing stories these talented young creatives will bring to life!

Learning beyond the classroom! 🌊⚓

BYAC Trainees of Platoon 1 recently visited the Barbados Coast Guard, where they received hands-on training in flare safety and emergency water entry techniques.

From learning how to properly use a flare to understanding the correct way to enter the water in emergency situations, trainees gained valuable practical skills while building confidence, discipline, and preparedness.

At BYAC, we are committed to equipping young people with real-life experiences that prepare them for the future.
