Elephants Are Secret Marathon Swimmers!

When most people think of elephants, they picture giant animals walking across grasslands—not swimming through open water. But the truth is far more impressive.

An elephant can swim continuously for up to 6 hours and travel 25–30 miles (40–50 km) across open water. During these long journeys, its trunk works like a natural snorkel, allowing it to breathe while most of its massive body stays underwater.

Their thick fat layer and enormous lungs provide natural buoyancy, helping them stay afloat with surprisingly little effort. Even after hours in the water, elephants are remarkably difficult to sink.

Scientists also believe these swimming abilities may be connected to a distant chapter in elephant evolution, suggesting that some of their ancient ancestors were adapted to more aquatic environments.
