Macon County:

District Attorney Mike Segrest has confirmed a shooting occurred at approximately 1 a.m. this morning in Tuskegee at Josh’s store. There was one male victim dead on the scene and 3 others wounded that were transported for medical attention, 2 of which remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Tallapoosa County/Dadeville division:

On Thursday, June 6th, 2024, a Tallapoosa county jury deliberated 39 minutes in returning a guilty a verdict on a 5 count indictment against Roger Dixon of Tallassee, Al, for R**e in the 1st degree, So**my in the 1st degree, kidnapping, in**st, and human trafficking. The incident took place in June of 2021 in Tallassee,Al in Tallapoosa county. The victim, who was 19 at the time, was the niece of the Defendant.

Assistant District Attorney Kisha Abercrombie opened, presented, and closed the case for the State. District Attorney Mike Segrest set second chair and did 2nd closing for the State.

District Attorney Mike Segrest would like to thank our law enforcement partners in this case. This includes Tallassee Police Chief Todd Buce, Investigator Chase Wilks, who was the case agent for the Tallassee Police Department and testified at trial. A special thanks to all the other officers who assisted in the investigation and trial.

Sentencing will be July 26th, 2024, in front of Judge Isaac Whorton, who was the presiding Judge over the trial.

Randolph county:

On May 15th, 2024 a Randolph County Jury found William Todd McCurry, of Graham Alabama, guilty of 3 counts of So**my in the 1st Degree of a child under the age of 12 and and 1 Count S*xual Abuse in the 1st Degree of a Child Under the Age of 12. The jury deliberated less than an hour in returning the verdicts. The victims, who are brothers, were 9 years old and 11 years old at the time the acts occurred in 2016. Both testified at trial.

Assistant District Attorney Tucker North Opened and presented the case along with Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Weldon. North also did first closing arguments. District Attorney Mike Segrest crossed a defense witness as well as a rebuttal witness and handled second closing arguments.

The District Attorney Mike Segrest would like to thank all assisting agencies. Sherriff David Coffield and the Randolph County Sherriff’s Office who investigated the case and the Child Advocacy Center that assisted. Also Circuit Clerk Chris May for his assistance in empaneling the jury.

Sentencing will take place June 6th, 2024 in front of Circuit Judge Steve Perryman, who presided over the trial.

Five individuals have now been arrested and charged with reckless murder in the February 16th, 2024 death of Jeffrey “Buck” Thompson, in Tuskegee, Alabama.

A juvenile male, 17, Tallassee

The investigation is still active may result in additional charges against these individuals and others.

Chambers county:

On Tuesday May 7th a Chambers county jury found Leon L. Fuller II, of Valley, Alabama, guilty of 2 counts of of So**my in the First degree and 2 counts of S*xual abuse of a child under the age of 12. The victim was age 9 and 10 when these acts occurred.

Assistant District Attorney Taylor-Lee Stokes opened, presented, and handled 1st closing arguments. District Attorney Mike Segrest set second chair handling cross examination of defense witnesses and second closing arguments.

The verdict marked the 3rd consecutive guilty verdict involving s*xual abuse of children during this 2 week term of court in Chambers county.

According to Segrest it’s been a successful trial term but there are a lot of people working together to make that happen. “There are so many people to thank. First is the victim who is 14 now and had the courage to face a jury. She’s my hero. Obviously there is my staff that helps prepare the case and is there for the victims. There are our Circuit Judges, in this case Judge Hall, his judicial assistant and court reporter. The Circuit clerk Lisa Burdette and her staff who summoned and empaneled the jurors. Chief Mike Reynolds and the Valley Police Department for making the charges and testifying in court. Dr. Sarah Flint with the Child Advocacy Center for interviewing victims and testifying. Sheriff Jeff Nelson for providing security and taking the defendants into custody after the verdicts. Even the County commission for giving us the space and facility to make this happen. But most of all I want to thank the 111 citizens of Chambers county who showed up willing to serve and sent a message. Don’t mess with our kids!”

Sentencing will take place on May 24th in front of Judge Kevin Hall who presided over the trial. Next week begins the two week spring term in Randolph County.

Chambers County:

On Friday May 3rd, 2024 a Chambers County Jury found James Pippin Guilty of 2 counts of S*xual Abuse in the 2nd Degree of a victim who was 14 at the time of the offense, which occurred in Valley, Alabama, in 2021.

Assistant District Attorney Taylor-Lee Stokes opened, presented, and closed the case for the State with Chief Deputy Michael Weldon sitting second chair.

Sentencing will be May 24th, 2024 in front of Judge Kevin Hall who presided over the trial.

District Attorney Mike Segrest would like to thank Chief Mike Reynolds and the Valley Police Department for their assistance in prosecuting the case as well as the victim who had the courage to come forward. Segrest stated “It took a lot of courage to for this young lady to come forward and face the defendant and jury. Protecting our children from acts like these is a priority to our office. Anyone who does this to a child will be prosecuted.”

Trials continue this week in Chambers County and will begin next week in Randolph County.

Chambers County:

A Chambers county jury took less than an hour and half in returning guilty verdicts against Lucious Cheeks for So**my in the 1st degree and S*xual abuse in the 1st degree involving a child under the age of 12. The victim was the defendant’s biological daughter and occurred in the City of Lanett in 2018.

Assistant District Attorney Taylor-Lee Stokes opened, presented, and closed the case for the State with Chief Deputy Michael Weldon sitting second chair. Sentencing will take place May 24th in front of Circuit Court Judge Kevin Hall who presided over the trial.

District Attorney Mike Segrest would like to thank the Lanett Police Department for their assistance at trial as well as Circuit Clerk Lisa Burdette for her help in coordinating the jury ve**re and empaneling the jury.

Macon County:

On April 24th, 2024 a Macon county jury deliberated just 32 minutes in returning a guilty verdict of Murder against Ora Lee Stakely for the death of her boyfriend DeMarius Tremaine Ferguson.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours on April 25th, 2022 at 2411 Rhonda Ave. in Tuskegee. At trial evidence was presented proving the Defendant shot the victim 5 times then waited 30 minutes before calling 911 claiming an intruder had broke in the home.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Weldon prepared and presented the case assisted by Assistant District Attorney Calvin Burroughs.

The case concluded the spring trial term in Macon County with back to back murder convictions.

According District Attorney Mike Segrest these verdicts send a message. “I’m proud of the people of Macon County. We had nearly a hundred people show up willing to serve for jury duty. These juries sent a message by swiftly and decisively returning guilty verdicts in less than an hour. A message that they are tired of the violence and it will not be tolerated here.”

The District Attorney’s office would also like to thank the Tuskegee Police Department for their help in presenting the case and other agencies involved. Also a special thanks to Circuit Clerk David Love and his staff in coordinating the jurors.

Sentencing will take place on May 9th, 2024 in front of Presiding Circuit Court Judge Isaac Whorton, who heard both murder cases.

The two week spring Jury term begins this Monday April, 29th in Chambers County, followed by two weeks in Randolph then concluding the spring trial terms with two weeks in Dadeville.

Macon/Tallapoosa County:

Chief Jennifer Jordan of the Tuskegee Police Department and District Attorney Mike Segrest of the 5th Judicial Circuit have confirmed that 3 individuals have been arrested and charged with reckless murder in the death of 16 year old Jeffrey Thompson of Tallassee, who was killed in Tuskegee on February 16th, 2024. According to District Attorney Mike Segrest more warrants have been issued and more arrest are imminent.

More information will be made available when appropriate.

Macon county:

On Wednesday April 17th, 2024 a Macon jury deliberated only 53 minutes in returning guilty verdicts for one count of murder and one count of certain persons forbidden(felon in possession of a firearm) against Maurice Demond Davis of Tuskegee for the 2019 death of MiKayce Parker at a venue formerly known as Busy Bees in Tuskegee.

The case was tried by Assistant District Attorney Kisha Abercrombie who opened, presented the State’s case, and handled first closing arguments and District Attorney Mike Segrest who cross examined defense witnesses including the Defendant who took the stand. Segrest also handled the final closing argument.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 9th, 2024 in Tuskegee. The District Attorney’s office is seeking to have Davis, who has 3 prior felonies, sentenced to life as an habitual offender.

Tallapoosa County:

On April 10th, 2024 a Tallapoosa county/Alexander city division jury convicted James Fletcher Ellis, of Alexander City of 2 counts of attempted murder.

Assistant District Attorney Kisha Abercrombie was lead Prosecutor in opening and presenting the case and was assisted by assistant District Attorney Robbie Treese, who handled first closing arguments, and District Attorney Mike Segrest who did second closing arguments.

Ellis will be sentenced on May 9th, 2024. The District Attorney’s office has moved to sentence Ellis pursuant to the habitual offender act and is seeking a life sentence.

District Attorney Mike Segrestwould like to thank Chief Jay Turner, the Alexander City Police Department and the officers who worked and testified in this case.

Press Release, Randolph County:

Today, March 27th, 2024, sentencing took place for Lamont William Greathouse who was convicted on February, 28th, 2024 by a Randolph County jury of So**my in the 1st degree and s*xual abuse of a child under the age of 12 years old. At the sentencing hearing the District Attorney’s office requested the maximum sentence and Circuit Judge Steve Perryman sentenced defendant Greathouse to the maximum sentence of life in prison plus 20 years to run consecutive for the 2 offenses.

District Attorney Mike Segrest stated “The defendant was tried and found guilty by a Randolph County jury after deliberating less than an hour. Was justice served today? The victim was a child and nothing can change or undo what happened to her and the suffering that continues today. There is no punishment that will ever change that. I applaud Judge Perryman for sending a loud and clear message that these crimes will not be tolerated. I believe that is what the people of Randolph County want and deserve.”

On Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, a Randolph county jury deliberated 52 minutes in returning guilty verdicts against defendant Lamont William Greathouse for one count of So**my in the 1st degree and one count of S*x Abuse of a Child under 12 years of age. So**my 1st degree is a Class A felony with a range of punishment of 10 to 99 years. S*x Abuse of a under Child under 12 years of age is a class B felony with a range of punishment of 2 to 20 years.

Assistant District Attorney Robbie Treese opened, presented, and closed the case assisted by trial coordinator Leslie Smith.

On December 1st, 2023 a Randolph County jury convicted Michael Shane Tripp of one count each of R**e in the 1st Degree, So**my in the 1st degree, S*x Abuse in the second degree, s*xual extortion, in**st, and solicitation of prostitution. All counts involving offenses against a minor child.

Assistant District Attorney Tucker North opened, presented, and closed the case assisted by Assistant District Attorney Robbie Treese who sat second chair and handled cross examination. Also a special thanks to Chief Jonathon Caldwell, the Roanoke Police Department and Investigator Randy Moore, who testified at trial.

R**e 1st and So**my 1st are both class A felonies with a range of punishment from 10-99 years. The s*x abuse 2nd, s*xual extortion, and in**st are all class C felonies with a range of punishment of 1 to 10 years. Solicitation of prostitution is a class A misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of 1 year.

According to District Attorney Mike Segrest this was an important verdict to him and his administration. “This case was one of the first cases I was involved in presenting to the Grand Jury back in January. It was just my second week on the job. I listened to the emotional testimony of the victim in front of that room full of people. l still feel that pain for her. Obviously I’m proud of my staff and the job they did, but there are no words to describe how proud I am of this young lady for having the courage to face what she did this week.” Sentencing is scheduled for December 18th, 2023 at 9am at the Randolph County Courthouse. Segrest added that the State of Alabama would be asking for the maximum sentence to be imposed on all 6 verdicts and run consecutively for a total of 229 years. Segrest added “We want to send a message to people that prey on children. Don’t mess with our kids.”

Yesterday, November 8th, 2023, a Chambers county jury deliberated less than an hour in returning guilty verdicts on 2 counts of Capital murder against Vincent Tiller for the July 17th, 2021 murder of Antavious Sharpe in Valley, Alabama.

Assistant District Attorney Taylor Lee Stokes opened, presented, and did first closing of the trial. Mrs. Stokes was assisted by District Attorney Mike Segrest who concluded the trial providing second closing. Assistant District Attorney Latasha Dudley helped prepare the case and provided technical support during the trial. Also a special thanks to the Valley Police Department and all personnel who assisted and testified.

The verdict concludes the 2 week fall trial term in Chambers county. The fall trial term for the 5th judicial circuit resumes after Thanksgiving on Monday November, 27th, in Randolph county for a 2 week term followed by a 2 week term in the Tallapoosa county Dadeville Division beginning December the 4th.

On November 3rd, 2023 a Chambers county jury returned guilty verdicts in less than an hour on 2 counts of capital murder against Casey Smith for the March 3rd, 2016 murder of his Uncle John Keith Smith in his Uncle’s home at 327 Alabama Ave in Lafayette, Alabama.

The 4 day trial was opened, presented, and closed by District Attorney Mike Segrest. Assistant District Attorney Robbie Treese was second chair on days 1,2, and 4 of trial and Chief Deputy Assistant District Attorney Michael Weldon on day 3 of trial. Presiding Circuit court Judge Isaac Whorton heard the case.

The District Attorney’s office commends their Law Enforcement partners who helped present this case including the Lafayette Police Department and the the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation as well as Sheriff Jeff Nelson and the Chamber’s county Sheriff’s office for security during the trial. Also a special thanks to Circuit clerk Lisa Burdette and her staff for assistance in checking in and qualifying the prospective jurors and a very special thanks to the 118 citizens of Chamber’s county who showed up willing to serve on jury duty.

According to Segrest he is pleased with the outcome but not the length of time it took to get to trial. “I apologized to the jury, the victim’s family, and the people of Chamber’s for it taking 7 years and 8 months to get this tried. That’s unacceptable. It’s not fair for the defendant awaiting trial either. Since taking office in January of this year I have made it a priority to attack the back log of cases. This Monday November 6th we will begin trial on another Capital murder case in the upstairs courtroom at the Chamber’s county courthouse and will strike another Jury in the downstairs courtroom running 2 trials at once.”

On Monday October 16th, 2023 a Tallapoosa county/Alexander city division jury found Nicholas Seth Harrison guilty of 2 counts of Capital Murder for the 2017 murder of Denzel Pope. Pope was shot and killed while driving his car along Hwy 280 west bound just past Home Depot in Alexander City.

Assistant District Attorney Robbie Treese presented the case with the assistance of District Attorney Mike Segrest. The District Attorney’s office commends the Alexander City Police Department and case agent Investigator Drew Machen along with Dadeville Police Department for the investigation and arrest.

After the guilty verdict Harrison was sentenced to 2 life sentences without the possibility of parole by Judge Isaac Whorton.

The last Capital Murder conviction in the Alexander City division was in 1996 when Tony Barksdale was convicted for the murder of Julie Rhodes.

Dadeville Shooting update:

On Monday September 18th, an Aniah’s law bond hearing was held on the 6th suspect, who was 15 at the time, that was transferred from juvenile court to be tried as an adult. The court ordered him to be held without bond. On Friday September 22nd, the case was presented to the Dadeville Grand and indictments were returned for 4 counts of reckless murder, 24 counts of Assault in the 1st degree, one count of Assault in the 3rd degree.

Youthful offender hearings are scheduled for four of the other suspects on October 26th.

Breaking news. An arrest has been made for the murder of Sandrea Taylor, a woman who was reported missing in Jackson’s Gap in March of this year and whose body was found in Macon County on March 27th.

A youthful offender hearing was held today on Defendant Johnny Brown, one of the 6 Dadeville shooting defendants. The request was DENIED from the bench by Judge Isaac Whorton. The remaining Defendants youthful offender hearings are scheduled for October 26th. After the hearing District Attorney Mike Segrest met with the victims and their families to answer questions and discuss the status of the case.

On May 31, 2023, at approximately 9:37 P.M., officers of the Valley Police Department were called to the Verandas Apartments in reference to a shooting. On their arrival, they found a Hispanic male (later identified as Ericsson Sandoval, 27 years old) laying in the roadway in front of building #5. Sandoval had been shot multiple times and was deceased.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Sandoval, a native of Venezuela, had entered the United States on July 5, 2022. It is not known how long he has been in our area.

At this time, we have not identified a motive or received a description of the shooter. Sandoval will be transported to the Medial Examiners office in Montgomery for autopsy.

We would like to thank Lanett PD, West Point PD, Opelika PD, the Chambers County Sheriff’s office, the Lee County Sheriff’s office, and the East Alabama Fire and EMS for their assistance.

PRESS RELEASE -

Patrick Shannon Templeton was convicted of Murder yesterday by a Chambers County jury. According to the facts presented at trial, the defendant shot the unarmed Justin Meadows, age 29, in the back of the head as he was fleeing. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Talylor-Lee Stokes and District Attorney Mike Segrest. Thanks to Valley Police Department on a job well done as the lead investigative agency. The defendant will be sentenced on May 26, 2023.

The Office of the 5th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Mike Segrest can confirm the 6th juvenile defendant in the Dadeville case is in custody and being held with out bond. The State intends to file a motion to transfer that juvenile to be tried as an adult. The Juvenile Court will have a hearing to determine whether or not he will be transferred and tried as an adult.
