👉🏻 Last week, we welcomed members of to our clinic for an introduction to equine exercise testing.

🐎 Together with Dr. Sofie Vandevelde and Wim Vandriessche, participants explored the principles behind the clinical examination, the Qualisys gait analysis and lactate threshold test and witnessed the complete testing procedure in practice.

🤎 Exercise test part 3: The exercise test at Bosdreef measures both heart rate and lactate in real time, during structured effort to pinpoint your horse’s lactate thresholds: the exact point where training stops building fitness and starts building fatigue.

🏇🏽 Our heart rate monitor gets attached to the tail and tracks (among other things) cardiovascular response throughout the test. Lactate levels are measured via blood samples taken at set intervals, giving a precise picture of how your horse’s body responds to increasing workload.

📊 With these data we build a personalised training program around your horse’s physiology. We give you a tailored schedule based on objective data from your horse, on that day. This test is all about building fitness and injury prevention.

📹 Objective Gait Analysis provides an objective evaluation of the horse’s movement using high-speed cameras and reflective markers.

📊 The system analyzes movement symmetry and can detect changes with an accuracy of up to 1 mm. This allows us to identify subtle asymmetries and compensation patterns long before they develop into visible lameness. The result is a measurable baseline that shows exactly how your horse is moving today. It enables us to monitor progress objectively, evaluate the effects of training, and detect both positive improvements and potential negative consequences at an early stage.

🩺 Exercise Test part 1: Performance problems build quietly in recovery times, breathing patterns and subtle shifts in how a horse carries effort. At Bosdreef, we aim to identify and address training-related problems before they develop into significant injuries or performance limitations. As part of our Exercise Test, every horse undergoes a thorough clinical examination: cardiovascular status, respiratory function, and oxygen dynamics measured at rest and under load.

By recognizing early signs of overload or compensation, we can adapt training in a timely and targeted way. The horse’s health, welfare and long-term performance are always our priority.

👩🏻‍⚕️ Meet our intern: Julia

After graduating as an equine veterinarian in Spain in 2013, Julia has been working in general equine practice ever since. Driven by a continuous desire to learn and develop further, she joined Bosdreef for an internship. She is especially interested in internal medicine, emergency care, and anaesthesia.

🐎 Objective gait analysis

Dr. Sofie Van de Velde performing a Qualisys analysis in our arena. This motion capture system uses markers, (placed on the horse’s head, withers and haunches) and high-speed cameras to objectively measure a horse’s movement and detect subtle asymmetries during locomotion.

A valuable tool to support clinical lameness evaluation and monitor progress over time.

👩🏼‍⚕️ Our intern Laura

Laura joined our clinic with a strong interest in equine internal medicine and neonatal care. Caring for foals and supporting them from the very beginning is something she finds very rewarding. At the same time, Laura values the diversity of cases in the clinic. She loves exploring all aspects of equine medicine and continuously expanding her knowledge and clinical insight. She’s very motivated to help provide the best possible care for each patient.
