[ONLINE EVENT] Indigenous Land Defenders Global Speak Out 📢

Indigenous Peoples continue to stand on the front lines of defending the world's forests, rivers, and mountains against imperialist aggression. As the global economic crisis deepens, imperialist powers, led by the United States, International Financial Institutions, and the World Bank, continue to intensify the exploitation of Indigenous lands to secure raw minerals, fossil fuels, energy resources, and strategic territories for military and economic dominance. These conditions have accelerated land grabbing, militarization, and environmental destruction across Indigenous lands worldwide.

On August 07, join us in forging our collective voice against land theft, neoliberal dictates, militarism, and fascist attacks against Indigenous Peoples and advocates fighting for the right to ancestral land and self-determination.

[WEBINAR] 🌿 From Commitments to Action: Advancing Human Rights-Based Biodiversity Governance in Asia

What is the role of environmental defenders in biodiversity conservation and upholding Indigenous People's rights?

Join APNED, Women4Biodiversity, UNEP, and OHCHR for the second webinar in the Webinar Series on Environmental Human Rights Defenders in Asia, where we will explore how Environmental Human Rights Defenders, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and other stakeholders are translating global biodiversity commitments into action across Asia.

The webinar will highlight key outcomes from the 4th Asia Environmental Human Rights Defenders Forum and discuss rights-based approaches to implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the importance of Indigenous Peoples' rights and customary land tenure, and pathways toward more inclusive, accountable, and participatory biodiversity governance.

CALLING all Pakistani youth advocating for climate action! ⏰️👦🏽👧✊️🌏

Join us for the Pakistan leg of the 🌏Climate Justice Now! Empowering the Youth in Asia-Pacific to Lead in Climate Action🌏 trainings on August 1-2, 2026 (Saturday and Sunday), 2:00-4:45 PM, via Zoom. This free training will be conducted in English (with Urdu interpretation and assistance).

Together with the Pakistan Maholiati Tahaffuz Movement and Pakistan Kissan Mazdoor Tehreek, we're launching two days of inputs and discussions designed to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to engage the NDCs and international mechanisms for climate justice 💥 This training is led by the Peoples Rising for Climate Justice Youth and Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders. It is also supported by the Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform - YECAP.

Apply until July 27 via either of the following forms:

“We are deeply concerned by reports that Indigenous human rights defenders have been deprived of their liberty in connection with their peaceful advocacy on behalf of Indigenous communities’ lands and rights,” the experts said in a statement.

They warned that criminal prosecutions targeting peaceful activists can have a “chilling effect” on civil society by discouraging others from speaking out against human rights abuses or environmental harms. They also raised concerns over reports that the police unit involved in the arrests has previously faced allegations of torture and other forms of ill-treatment.

“Philippine prosecutors should dismiss criminal complaints filed by companies to silence communities raising concerns about their business operations,” said Lian Buan, Southeast Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Philippine legislators should revive bills that would make it easier for the authorities to block such criminal lawsuits from proceeding.”

Prosecutors in the Philippines should dismiss criminal libel complaints, including those filed by a mining company, against four rights advocates in Nueva Vizcaya province.

[STATEMENT] APNED stands in solidarity with Pala’wan environmental defenders protecting their ancestral lands in Brooke’s Point, Palawan

The Asia Pacific Network of Environmental Defenders (APNED) stands in solidarity with the Pala’wan Indigenous communities and fellow environmental defenders in Brooke’s Point, Palawan, who continue to defend their ancestral lands, forests, watersheds, and communities from large-scale nickel mining.

Environmental defenders across Asia and the Pacific share a common struggle. Whether protecting forests, rivers, coastlines, biodiversity, or Indigenous territories, defenders are safeguarding not only their own communities but also ecosystems that are critical to addressing the global climate and biodiversity crises. The actions of the Pala’wan community in Sitio Linao reflect this shared commitment to protecting both people and the environment.

APNED supports the Pala’wan Indigenous Peoples in asserting their rights to self-determination, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and the protection of their ancestral domains. We recognize their longstanding efforts to oppose mining activities that threaten one of the Philippines’ most ecologically significant landscapes, including areas surrounding the Mount Mantalingahan Protected Landscape, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that supports rich biodiversity and provides vital ecosystem services for surrounding communities.
