24 March 2026-We welcomed visitors from the UoM, A/Prof. Dieter M. Bulach and Dr. Kinley Penjor (PhD candidate), to the NCAH Laboratory. As part of the ongoing TRICYCLE surveillance collaboration, Dr. Kinley Penjor (Principal Investigator and PhD candidate, University of Melbourne) is working in partnership with the National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH), Royal Centre for Disease Control (RCDC), and Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH). This One Health initiative focuses on integrated surveillance of ESBL-producing E. coli across human, animal, and environmental sectors to understand the magnitude of the AMR problem in the country.

Within this collaboration, NCAH plays a critical role in supporting the animal health component by facilitating the collection of poultry cloacal samples, isolation of ESBL-producing E. coli, and shipment of isolates to the UoM for advanced phenotypic and whole genome sequencing analyses.

Through shared data, technical expertise, and capacity building, this partnership contributes to advancing evidence-based approaches for global health and AMR surveillance

The National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) is organising a five-day workshop focused on reviewing Laboratory Quality Management Systems (LQMS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with funding support from Pandemic Fund, FAO Bhutan. This initiative brings together participants from all levels — from national institutions to district veterinary laboratories — each contributing unique perspectives and challenges.
We are deeply honored by the gracious presence of Dasho Director General, whose support and guidance continue to inspire our mission to strengthen laboratory systems across Bhutan.
This diverse gathering ensures that the solutions we develop are not only technically sound but also inclusive and adaptable to the realities faced by all laboratories. Together, we’re building a resilient and reliable diagnostic network for animal health.

Refresher Training for Field Veterinary Paraprofessionals (24- 29 November, 2025, Trashigang)

The Department of Livestock (DoL), in collaboration with FAO and with funding support from Pandemic Fund Project, is conducting a six-day refresher training program for field veterinary paraprofessionals from the east-central and eastern regions. The program brings together participants from seven districts, including participants from Regional Veterinary Hospital & Epidemiology Centre (RVH&EC) Gelephu, RVH & EC Phuntsholing, SVL Nganglam, and the Center for Nublang Conservation & Development under NBC. A total of 39 veterinary paraprofessionals posted at Livestock Extension Centres, District Veterinary Hospitals, central programs and government farms are participating in this training program. With this cohort, the Department will successfully complete the nationwide refresher training for all field veterinary paraprofessionals in the country.

With the rapid advancements in veterinary medicine and increasing emergence and re-emergence of transboundary animal diseases, zoonosis and public health threats, continuous learning and upskilling of knowledge and practical skills are crucial for field veterinary paraprofessionals. Therefore, this refresher training program covers key areas essential for improving animal health service delivery in the country, focusing on Veterinary Preventive and Clinical Medicine, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, Animal Welfare, Biosecurity and Biosafety, animal reproduction, common Surgical Procedures, and National Disease Prevention and Control Strategies.

A combination of theoretical, practical, pre-training and post training test approaches are being adopted for this training program to ensure comprehensive learning. After this training, participants are expected to have upgraded skills and knowledge, leading to enhanced efficiency in animal health service delivery. This initiative aims to strengthen the delivery of critical veterinary services in the field, ultimately enhancing the standard of animal health care, food security and safeguarding public health in Bhutan.

Department of Livestock Conducts Fourth Cohorts of Refresher Training for Field Veterinary Paraprofessionals.

18 November 2025, Mongar: The Department of Livestock (DoL), with funding support from the
Pandemic Fund Project, and in collaboration with FAO is conducting a six-day refresher training
program for field veterinary paraprofessionals from the west-central and eastern regions of Bhutan.
The training, held from 17–22 November 2025 in Mongar, marks the fourth batch of capacity-building
refresher course, following earlier successful sessions in Phuentsholing and Gelephu.
A total of 29 veterinary paraprofessionals, representing Dzongkhags, District veterinary hospitals and
central farms, are participating in this round of training. Continuous professional development for
veterinary paraprofessionals is increasingly important as Bhutan faces the emergence and re-
emergence of diseases, evolving farming systems, and rapid advancements in diagnostic and
therapeutic technologies. However, limited funding historically posed challenges to regular upskilling.
This refresher training aims to bridge these gaps and ensure that frontline veterinary workers remain
equipped with current knowledge, techniques and best practices.

The comprehensive training curriculum covers key technical areas essential for improving animal
health service delivery, including Veterinary Preventive and Clinical Medicine, Clinical Case
Management, Veterinary Microbiology, Animal Welfare, Biosecurity and Biosafety, common Surgical
Procedures, and Disease Prevention and Control Strategies.
The refresher course applies a blended methodology of theoretical lectures, hands-on practical
sessions, case studies and interactive problem-solving exercises. To measure learning improvements,
participants undergo both pre- and post-training assessments.
By the conclusion of the six-day program, participants are expected to gain enhanced technical skills
and refreshed competencies enabling them to deliver more effective, reliable and timely animal
health services. Strengthening the capacity of field veterinary paraprofessionals directly contributes to
improved livestock health, better management of zoonotic and wildlife-related risks, and ultimately
enhances public health and ecosystem health in Bhutan.

World AMR Awareness Week 2025 (18 to 24 of November)

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is observed globally every year from 18 to 24 November to raise awareness and promote collective action against the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Drug-resistant microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, can spread between humans, animals, plants, and the environment. Their increasing resistance poses significant risks to human and animal health, food security, livelihoods, and national economies. The misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, coupled with factors such as environmental pollution and weak human and animal health systems, continue to accelerate the emergence and spread of AMR.
The theme for WAAW 2025, “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future”, underscores the urgent need for bold, and coordinated One Health action. AMR is not a distant challenge; it is a current and rapidly intensifying threat. Yet, global awareness, investment, and response efforts remain inadequate.
Therefore, WAAW aims to promote responsible and sustainable practices among all stakeholders, including the public, healthcare providers, animal health professionals, environmentalists, farmers, policymakers, youth groups, civil society organizations, and the media, who play a vital role in preventing the emergence and transmission of drug-resistant pathogens.
