The two-day Workshop on “Guidelines for the Establishment of Museums and Heritage Galleries in Bhutan” successfully concluded today, 28th May 2026, at the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development (DCDD), Thimphu, with the participation of around 55 participants from museums, heritage galleries, cultural institutions, and relevant agencies across Bhutan.

The second day of the workshop focused on discussions and review of the Draft Guidelines for the Establishment of Museums and Heritage Galleries in Bhutan, emphasizing the need for a structured framework to guide the establishment, operation, sustainability, and quality assurance of museums and heritage galleries in the country. Participants actively shared recommendations, experiences, and insights to further strengthen the draft guidelines and promote collective ownership of the document.

The workshop reaffirmed the importance of museums and heritage galleries as vital spaces for cultural education, community engagement, and the preservation of Bhutan’s rich tangible and intangible heritage. Through collaborative discussions and expert-led sessions, the initiative highlighted the Royal Government of Bhutan’s continued commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage while promoting sustainable cultural development for future generations.

The workshop concluded with the awarding of certificates of participation to all attendees.

Bhutan is working towards a unified policy to govern how museums and heritage galleries are established and run across the country. The Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development, DCDD is drafting Guidelines for the Establishment of Museums and Heritage Galleries. Such a document has become critical as museums and heritage galleries become increasingly important platforms for cultural education, community engagement, and preservation of Bhutan’s tangible and intangible heritage.

Day 1 of the Workshop on “Guidelines for the Establishment of Museums and Heritage Galleries in Bhutan” commenced today, 27th May 2026, at the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development (DCDD), Thimphu, bringing together around 55 participants from across the country, including museum professionals, cultural practitioners, architects, government officials, and representatives from museums, heritage galleries, and private cultural institutions.

The opening session highlighted the important role of museums and heritage galleries in preserving Bhutan’s cultural identity, strengthening stewardship of heritage, and supporting the nation’s 21st Century Economic Roadmap and 10X Vision.

Today’s sessions focused on key foundational aspects for establishing museums and heritage galleries, including:
• Criteria and governance frameworks for museums and heritage galleries
• Feasibility studies and site assessment considerations
• Collections management standards and ethical practices
• Overview of the Integrated Digital Museum Management System (IDMMV)
• Exhibition planning, gallery design, storytelling, and digital interpretation tools

The workshop provided an important platform for collaborative learning, knowledge exchange, and discussions on building sustainable, accessible, and future-ready museums and heritage galleries in Bhutan.

Our school proudly witnessed an inspiring presentation by Sonam Youden of Class 10C, a youth representative for museums in Bhutan.

The session highlighted the importance of museums as spaces for learning, preserving culture, and understanding our identity as Bhutanese youth. Through her experience, she shared valuable insights on heritage preservation, youth engagement, and the role we all play in protecting our traditions for future generations.

The talk also reflected her participation in national level programs, reminding us that young people have a powerful role in shaping the future of our country.

A meaningful and enriching activity that encouraged all students to stay connected to their roots and take pride in Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage.

The Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development under the Ministry of Home Affairs, in collaboration with the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, launched a Nu 3 million project titled “Empowering Cultural Heritage” aimed at strengthening Bhutan’s heritage sector through youth engagement, museum modernisation, and digital innovation.
Implemented by the department’s Museum Division, the initiative seeks to enhance Bhutan’s cultural institutions while reinforcing bilateral cooperation between Bhutan and Australia.
