CHILDREN CALL FOR AN INCLUSIVE AND QUALITY EDUCATION SYSTEM
Children have presented a Call- to -Action report to the respective leaders from Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe on the 19th of November 2023. The future leaders who converged in Walvis Bay, Namibia for the third installment of the inaugural Sub-Regional World Childrenβs Day engaged, deliberated and recommended solutions on matters that affect them.
The children who had been in Walvis Bay from the 17th β 20th November 2023, had ample time to interact through panel discussions where they unpacked common welfare issues affecting them across the region. Amongst the key areas that call for action by the governments of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe are: an inclusive and quality education system that ensures that teachers are competent with an improved curriculum and infrastructure; A participatory child-friendly climate action where children are part of the solution to the current climate change crisis; Breaking down barriers for an inclusive society where governments, educational institutions and the society at large are required to remove any barriers that hinder the full participation of children with disabilities in society; and Strengthening of child protection systems that support every child.
The Presidents of Botswana His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi E.K Masisi, and Namibia His Excellency Dr. Hage Geingob, the Vice-President of Zimbabwe Hon. Dr. Constantino Chiwenga, and the Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Hon. Doreen Mwamba of Zambia joined over 100 children for this yearβs commemoration. It is at this event that children had the opportunity to discuss with leaders from the four countries, progress made in advancing childrenβs rights and keeping commitments from the previous year in the area of equal access to education, climate change participation and tackling violence against children.

WORLD CHILDREN'S DAY__ 'MEDIA TAKE OVER'
Sunday 19th November 2023: It was all fun at Mass Media complex as children mainly students from different schools converged at mass media complex to have a hands on experience of working in the media environment.
The children got an opportunity to take up key roles such as character generator operators, producers, editors, and presenters. The 'Media Take Over' is an important activity of the World Children's day because children get to interact with professionals who usually address issues affecting them (children) using the various media platforms.
At BOPA newsroom, in addition to a hands on editing experience, the kids were taken through the process of Daily News production. Mr Thebeyame Ramoroka Acting Deputy Director BOPA explained to the children that Daily News in its reporting takes children's rights and issues seriously in all its processes and production.
In addition, Mr Ramoroka said working for Daily News requires commitment, discipline, and dedication because its production requires employees to be at work for endless hours in order to deliver quality service to its customers.
Ms Motlalepula Mokgadi Acting Deputy Director Publications encouraged the kids to take reading Daily News seriously because that's where they can find most information on Government programmes and Policies aimed at empowering livelihoods.

"Let The Children Be"-Says UNICEF Africa Regional Director
The government of Namibia in collaboration with UNICEF hosted delegates from Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively for a welcome dinner yesterday, ahead of World Children's Day. This year's sub-regional commemoration will be held on the 19th November 2023 in Walvis Bay, Namibia.
"On World Children's Day we are making space for children and young people to raise their voices on issues that matter to them" said Ms. Yvonne Chaka Chaka who has been UNICEF's Goodwill Ambassador for the past 18 years. The multiple award-winning artist who holds the interests of children dearly, encouraged the community to work together in shaping the future of the children.
For her part, the UNICEF Africa Regional Director - Eastern & Southern Africa, Ms. Etleva Eva Kadilli said World Children's Day allows children to air their challenges as well as to recommend solutions to decision makers. She further said, "we should create an enabling environment for children to be themselves".
