MINISTRY LAUNCHES 2026 BOTSWANA SCHOOLS NATIONAL CHORAL MUSIC COMPETITIONS

The Government of Botswana has reintroduced choral music competitions in schools to promote discipline, talent development, patriotism, and cultural preservation among learners. A task team has been established to reinstate and revitalize choral music competitions across primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools throughout the country. The initiative aims to restore and strengthen the culture of choral music among learners nationwide. Two categories of songs have been selected for the competitions: Western and African vernacular songs.

Speaking at the launch of the National Choral Music Competitions at Northside Primary School in Gaborone, Honourable Justin C. Hunyepa, the Assistant Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education said the initiative aims to nurture young talent while strengthening national values and cultural identity. He announced the establishment of a National Choral Music Technical Team that will oversee the competitions, develop standards, provide teacher training, and coordinate partnerships. He also called on teacher unions, development partners, businesses, and communities to support the programme.

He further noted that the programme will strengthen patriotism through improved performance of the national anthem and foster greater appreciation of Botswana’s cultural heritage. The initiative also supports Botswana’s STEAM education agenda by recognizing the arts as a key contributor to critical thinking, emotional intelligence, communication, and problem-solving skills.

The event was also graced by Hon. Jacob Kelebeng, Minister of Sport and Arts, who expressed his support for choral music as an important component of the creative industries. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and education stakeholders and pledged continued support for the growth and success of music programmes in schools nationwide.

The National Choral Music Competitions are scheduled to take place on the 22nd August 2026 at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks in Mogoditshane. Members of the public are encouraged to attend and witness the choral music performances and celebrate the talents of Botswana’s young musicians.

JAPANESE INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGENCY HANDS OVER SCHOOL FEEDING SURVEY REPORT

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Mmamiki Kamanakao has received the Survey Report on Botswana School Feeding Programme from Ambassador of Japan to Botswana, His Excellency Yusuke Shindo.

The school feeding survey was conducted through technical support from Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA Botswana). The survey was conducted to get a baseline information on feeding in our schools. The information collection was conducted in eight schools both rural and urban areas. The survey aimed to check issues such as among others, adherence to the prescribed school feeding menu, food availability, status of the kitchen infrastructure, food wastage and uniformity in pricing of food commodities.

As a follow up of this survey report, JICA will further provide technical support to the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education by dispatching three experts in the area of nutrition and food value chain. The experts will be assigned to work under the school feeding programme for a period of two years.

The Ministry intends to abolish the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)

When addressing Ntlo ya Dikgosi today, Secretary for General Education in the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Mr Steve Bothasitse announced that the ministry is intending to abolish PSLE guaranteeing 12 years of uninterrupted basic education alongside enhanced psychosocial assessments.

While Dikgosi widely applauded these advancements, Kgosi Dingalo raised concerns that removing the PSLE might cause teachers to lapse in their duties. Reassuring the house, the director clarified that accountability will shift from simply judging final products to continuously fine-tuning internal processes within existing structures to maintain high teaching standards.

COMMUNITY JOINS HANDS TO IMPROVE FACILITIES AT PATIKWANE JSS

The spirit of collective responsibility and community partnership was on full display over the weekend as residents of Mabeleapudi, Paje, Tshimoyapula, and Majwanaadipitse came together to undertake a facelift of the boys’ and girls’ hostels at Patikwane Junior Secondary School (JSS).

The community-driven initiative involved a variety of maintenance and improvement activities, including clearing overgrown grass and trees, cleaning the hostel surroundings, painting both the interior and exterior sections of the hostels, and repairing bunk beds. These efforts aimed to enhance the school environment and improve the welfare of learners residing in the hostels.

The successful implementation of the project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders who contributed resources, expertise, and labour. Among the key contributors were Boiteko Trust, Galaxy Paints, Pasquallian Investment Botswana, social clubs such as Remmogo and All Coaches, Choppies, and several other well-wishers.

This commendable initiative reflects the long-term value of self-reliance, volunteerism, and community engagement in supporting education. It also demonstrates how strategic partnerships between communities, the private sector, and local leadership can contribute meaningfully to creating a conducive learning environment for learners.
