THE 7 DEPARTMENTS, 1 PARASTATAL OF THE MINISTRY:

Department of Corporate Services (DCS)
The overall mandate of Corporate Services is to co-ordinate and ensures efficient management of a full range of the Ministerial resources and support services by Departments, by performing the following functions: Human Resources Management and Administration, Finance and Development, Procurement, and Strategy Management. Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP)
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks is tasked with the responsibility of conserving and managing the country’s fish and wildlife resources and their habitats in consultation with local, regional and international stakeholders for the benefit of present and future generations. It promotes and facilitates sustainable utilization of fish and wildlife resources through active participation of citizens and places emphasis on partnerships with the private and sector to fully develop potential of fish as wildlife resources. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
Promotes environmental based projects for the conservation and protection of environment in order to increase the effectiveness with which natural resources are used and managed so that the beneficial interactions are optimised and harmful environment side effects are minimized. Department of Tourism (DOT)
Manages and promotes sustainable tourism development through the formulation, monitoring and implementation of policies and strategies that ensure sustainable tourism development. Additionally the department assists in acquiring licences for tourism related business opportunities. Department of Meteorological Services (DMS)
Provides guidance in project formulation focused on addressing issues of global warming and adaptation to climate change. It also provides quality weather and climate information and related services to the Government and the private sector to make timely and informed decisions for sustainable socio-economic development in circumstances where weather plays a significant role. Department of Forestry and Range Resources (DFRR)
The DFRR is charged with the conservation, protection, and management of vegetation resources in Botswana. The DFRR as the management authority for vegetation resources ensures that these resources are used sustainably for the benefit of the present and future generations. Department of National Museum and Monuments (DNMM)
The department is mandated to be the custodian of Botswana’s cultural and natural heritage. It is guided by its mission and vision to be able to effectively play this important role in the advancement of the country. The DNMM exists to protect, preserve and promote Botswana’s cultural and natural heritage for sustainable utilization thereof by collecting, researching, conserving and exhibiting for public education and appreciation. Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO)
This is a ministerial Parastatal statutory body charged with the responsibility of product development and of marketing the country as a tourism destination to the national, regional and international markets; promoting investment into the tourism sector; and grading and classifies tourist facilities. Minister of Environment and Tourism, Honourable Wynter Boipuso Mmolotsi, has called for greater community involvement in the conservation of Botswana’s vulture populations.

The Minister made the call during the commemoration of Vulture Awareness Day yesterday, which was marked by an awareness walk from Goo Moremi Village to Goo Moremi Gorge, an important vulture breeding site in Botswana.

Minister Mmolotsi said vultures play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and contribute significantly to Botswana’s tourism industry. He noted that these birds are rare and are found in only a few countries across Southern Africa, making their protection particularly important.

However, he said vulture populations continue to face several threats, including poisoning, habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, powerline collisions, electrocution and disease.
He urged communities to reject illegal wildlife poisoning and report such incidents to the relevant authorities, emphasising that conservation is a shared responsibility.
The Minister also encouraged young people to participate actively in conservation and take advantage of livelihood opportunities within the tourism and conservation sectors.
He said the Ministry is committed to growing the tourism industry so that it makes a greater contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Mmolotsi stressed that achieving this goal would require meaningful community involvement and the protection of Botswana’s tourism product.
“As we walk together today, let us walk with one purpose: to raise awareness, inspire action and protect our vultures,” he said.
The Minister commended Goo Moremi Resort, Moremi Manonnye Conservation Trust, Raptors Botswana, Botswana Tourism Organisation, Mascom and other partners for their continued contribution to vulture conservation.
The event also featured contributions from community and conservation stakeholders.

Kgosi Major Days of Goo Moremi welcomed participants to the village, while Dr Moses Selebatso of Raptus Botswana educated walkers about vultures, their ecological importance and the threats facing their populations.
Mr Rollen Galeboe of Mascom Wireless outlined the company’s partnership with the Moremi Manonnye Conservation Trust, which is now in its third year.

The commemoration served as a reminder of the importance of collective action in protecting Botswana’s rare vulture populations and preserving the ecosystems and tourism opportunities they support.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism, in partnership with the Gaborone City Council, the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana, together with various stakeholders, convened this morning in Gaborone for a cleanup campaign focused on litter picking in and around the Main Mall.

The primary objective of the cleanup campaign is to maintain Gaborone as a clean, well-kept, and visually appealing destination for both domestic and international tourists.

A clean and well-managed city is a crucial component of a successful tourism destination. The aesthetics, cleanliness, and overall upkeep of our public spaces significantly impact the perception and experience of our city. Furthermore, they demonstrate our commitment to valuing the environments in which we live, work, conduct business, and welcome visitors.

The cleanup initiative aims to cultivate a culture of ownership, stewardship, and pride within our city and the business environment in which we operate.

Among the officials in attendance were His Worship the Mayor, Oarabile Motlaleng, and the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Ms. Neo Sebolao.

Today marked the beginning of a sustained commitment to cleanliness, ownership, and stewardship, not only in Gaborone but across our cities and communities.
