JOINT COMMUNIQUÉ: TRANS-KALAHARI RAILWAY PROJECT 🇳🇦🇧🇼

The High Commission of the Republic of Namibia to the Republic of Botswana is pleased to share the Joint Communiqué issued following the Joint Ministerial Committee Meeting of the Trans-Kalahari Railway Project, held on 31 July 2026 in Kasane, Botswana.

The meeting was co-chaired by Hon. Veikko Nekundi, Minister of Works and Transport of the Republic of Namibia, and Hon. Noah S.L.M. Salakae, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Botswana.

During the meeting, the Ministers:

* Received the Feasibility Report, marking the successful conclusion of the comprehensive assessment of the project;
* Reaffirmed the shared commitment of Namibia and Botswana to advance the Trans-Kalahari Railway;
* Called for the procurement phase to be expedited within a shorter timeframe; and
* Emphasised the project’s potential to strengthen trade, logistics connectivity, regional integration and socio-economic development within the SADC region.

The Trans-Kalahari Railway remains a strategic infrastructure initiative that is expected to improve the movement of goods, enhance access to regional and international markets, and generate significant economic opportunities for the people of Namibia and Botswana.

TRANS-KALAHARI RAILWAY PROJECT GOVERNANCE MEETINGS

The Joint Ministerial Committee of the Trans-Kalahari Railway Project is meeting today, 31 July 2026, in Kasane, Botswana.

The Ministerial meeting follows the Joint Technical Committee and Joint Steering Committee meetings held in Kasane from 27 to 30 July 2026, during which officials from Namibia and Botswana reviewed progress and considered key technical and strategic matters relating to the implementation of the project.

The meeting is being co-chaired by Hon. Noah Salakae, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Botswana, and Hon. Veikko Nekundi, Minister of Works and Transport of the Republic of Namibia.

The Trans-Kalahari Railway Project remains an important bilateral initiative aimed at strengthening regional connectivity, facilitating trade and promoting economic development between Namibia and Botswana.

🇳🇦 Unlocking Namibia’s Business & Tourism Landscape 🇧🇼

The High Commission of the Republic of Namibia to the Republic of Botswana, in collaboration with the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) and the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), successfully hosted a two-day engagement in Gaborone aimed at strengthening Namibia–Botswana economic cooperation.

Day 1 focused on trade and investment, showcasing Namibia’s competitive investment opportunities and fostering strategic business partnerships. Day 2 highlighted Namibia as a premier tourism destination, bringing together the diplomatic corps and tourism stakeholders to explore opportunities for increased regional travel and collaboration.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all our partners, speakers and participants whose valuable contributions made these engagements a success. Together, we continue to deepen bilateral relations, promote trade and investment, and unlock new opportunities for shared growth and prosperity between Namibia and Botswana.
