Letsholo Backs Anti-Discrimination Bill
By ONNEILE SETLALEKGOSI-RAMASILO
In a recent parliamentary session, Thapelo Letsholo, MP for Kanye North, endorsed the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to prevent discrimination based on inters*x status and disability.
Speaking in parliament, MP Letsholo praised the bill for protecting people from discrimination based on inters*x status and disability. He called the bill a significant step towards inclusivity and equal treatment for everyone, regardless of gender or physical abilities.
Highlighting the real-world implications of discrimination, Letsholo shared the story of a woman compelled to marry abroad due to domestic discriminatory practices. He underscored the importance of enshrining equality and fairness within the nation's legal framework.
While Letsholo supported the bill, he also acknowledged the complexity surrounding other sensitive issues not covered by the bill, such as same-s*x marriage, capital punishment, abortion, and commercial s*x work. He suggested these topics be addressed through a referendum, advocating for public involvement in determining the nation's laws and ethical standards.
However, Letsholo warned against using referendums for minority rights, as majority rule could harm minority protections. He called for a fairer way to amend the constitution to safeguard minority rights.
"Our support for anti-discrimination measures is unwavering, We must approach referendums with caution to ensure the protection of minority rights. Our goal is to achieve fair and just constitutional amendments through balanced democratic processes that reflect our commitment to inclusive governance in Botswana," stated Letsholo.
