Day 3 in Illinois reflects service and Belizean pride.

These photos capture officers from the Nationality and Passport Department of the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour as they continue assisting Belizeans and their families with services of the department. They show Belizeans living abroad, generations coming together, including young people who carry Belizean heritage. The Diaspora Relations Unit also played a vital role in sharing services it offers.

Day 2 in Illinois: Mobile Immigration Hub and Diaspora meet up

These are some of the faces of the Belizeans we served on Saturday, August 8, as the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour continued its mobile services in Evanston, Illinois.

Most came to renew their Belizean passports. Others, including Belizean Americans raising families in the United States, came to apply for their children to receive Belizean nationality by descent.

While the applications, photographs and biometrics occurred, Belizeans were reconnecting.

A barber who once worked behind St. Martin’s in Belize City was happy just to see so many Belizeans gathered in one place in the Chicago area. Ladies born in the 1950s found old friends they had not seen in years. Conversations started between people who remembered the same neighbourhoods, communities and pieces of home.

Because whether someone moves from one district of Belize to another, or builds a life thousands of miles away in Illinois, Texas, Colorado, California or elsewhere, the connection to Belize remains.

For some, the hub also solved a very practical challenge. Belizeans who were unable to easily reach other services such as the Lands Department, they were able to complete their applications and fix issues on site, saving them the expense and inconvenience of travelling to Belize.

That convenience is already bringing Belizeans from across the United States. Families have travelled from as far as Colorado, while others have come from Texas and California for passport and nationality services.

The Ministry’s Illinois hub is a success and it continues today, Sunday August 9. For these few days, the Heritage Ballroom at the Immigration hub also also become, a reunion and a bonding experience for Belizeans living in the United States. 🇧🇿

Belize’s mobile immigration services are making it easier for Belizeans living abroad to access essential services closer to home.

This weekend in Evanston, Illinois, the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour is providing passport and nationality by descent services to Belizeans from Chicago and surrounding states.

Belize’s former Ambassador to the Organization of American States and current ambassador to the USA Nestor Mendez, says the initiative is an important example of government bringing services directly to the Belizean diaspora.

Belizeans Travel Across the United States for Immigration Services at Evanston Diaspora Hub

EVANSTON, Illinois, August 8, 2026 — Belizeans from across the Chicago area and several other parts of the United States travelled to Evanston this weekend to access passport and nationality services brought directly to the diaspora by Belize’s Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour.

While many of those attending the Diaspora Mobile Hub came from Evanston, Chicago and surrounding communities, others travelled considerably farther. Belizeans arrived from states including Texas, Washington and Colorado, with several people making the trip from the Dallas area to complete applications and other immigration related processes.

The different distances travelled reflected a common purpose: maintaining their documentation and strengthening their legal connection to Belize.

Some visitors came to renew their Belizean passports, while others submitted first time passport applications. Families also visited the hub to apply for Belizean nationality by descent, allowing eligible children and other descendants born outside Belize to formally establish their Belizean nationality.

The Evanston hub is being held from August 7 to 9 and offers passport and nationality services through the Nationality and Passports Department. The initiative forms part of the Ministry’s wider effort to make essential services more accessible to Belizeans living abroad.

For members of the diaspora, bringing the service closer can reduce the distance, time and logistical challenges associated with completing important documentation. Belize passport applications require an applicant to appear in person at an Immigration Office in Belize or at a designated Belizean diplomatic or consular mission.

That made Evanston a destination this weekend for Belizeans whose journeys extended well beyond Illinois.

The presence of visitors from Texas, Washington and Colorado also demonstrated the willingness of Belizeans to travel when an opportunity becomes available to complete documentation in a setting designed specifically for the diaspora.

For some families, the visit was about renewing a passport and maintaining the ability to travel with Belizean documentation. For others, particularly parents seeking nationality by descent for their children, the process represented another way of passing their connection to Belize from one generation to the next.

Belizean nationality by descent is available to qualifying persons born outside Belize based on Belizean parentage.

The Chicago diaspora is a growing one. Some the Chicago residents explained that they have a vibrant connection in Chicago and this Saturday they are hosting a fundraiser for 14 Belizean American students who they are giving scholarships to attend school. Belize Ambassador to The United States H.E. Nestor E. Mendez attended the Ministry's immigraiton hub alongside Belize’s Ambassador for Diaspora Relations Sandhya Murphy.
The Evanston initiative follows other diaspora outreach efforts undertaken by the Government of Belize in the United States. Earlier this year, approximately 230 passports and 17 nationality certificates were delivered to Belizeans abroad during another outreach initiative, as officials pointed to continued demand for documentation services among Belizean communities in the United States.

The Evanston Mobile Hub continues through Sunday, August 9.
