This gorgeous yellow-headed Amazon is Cinco. He was already 50 years old when he came to us 10 years ago. He had spent his life in a small cage with pvc perching and has arthritic feet as a result. He’s also almost blind with cataracts and his little pleasures are destroying paper, cardboard and hibiscus sticks and interacting with Legs & Zelda, his red-lored neighbours. He allows the occasional head scratch if he knows we are coming, but other than that he’s content by himself, and his odd nap position gives us the occasional “oh my god he’s dead” moment.

Cinco is enjoying his chill sanctuary living thanks to all those who have donated and supported BBR and the Parrot Sanctuary at BBR over the years. Thank you for your kindness and for giving birds like Cinco a safe place to live.

This is Babe, in case you haven't already met him. He came to us in 2020 as a fledgling and was missing his upper beak. The family that brought him to us say they found him this way, but we didn't really get the full story. We suspect that he was attacked by an adult bird while he was still in the nest. Despite doing their best for him, the rescuers didn't have the knowledge or resources to feed him adequately and he was clearly struggling.
Babe has really flourished in Sanctuary life, and has a partner in Lulu, another red-lored Amazon who has a missing wing.
Thanks to your support they can live in as near-natural conditions as possible, in true sanctuary free from fear, pain and stress.

Over the past 21 years, Belize Bird Rescue has inevitably become home to a number of non-releasable parrots. Some have physical disabilities, while others struggle with behavioral issues that persist despite years of rehabilitation. A few are even exotic species. While physical challenges—such as missing wings, legs, or beaks—clearly necessitate lifelong sanctuary, irreversible behavioral issues can take years to fully assess.
We once believed in "never say never," but with some birds having been at BBR for over 15 years with no behavioral improvement, it may be time to acknowledge that for some, release will never be an option.
Today, our 63 sanctuary parrots make up nearly 30% of our resident birds at any given time. Recognizing their distinct needs, separate from those in rehabilitation, is a crucial step toward developing independent projects and securing dedicated funding.
In the coming months, we look forward to sharing the incredible stories of these birds—how they arrived at BBR, their journeys so far, and what the future holds for them.
We hope you enjoy following this new Belize Bird Rescue page!
