The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) was pleased to bring its Waste Warriors Summer Camp to San Ignacio, Cayo District, with an exciting day of environmental education, games, interactive activities and lots of fun!

The camp was held at Hode’s Place in San Ignacio, where our young Waste Warriors learned about the importance of protecting the environment and how their everyday actions can make a difference.

Through activities centered on the 5 Rs – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle, the children explored proper waste management, different types of waste, environmental responsibility and simple ways they can help keep their homes, schools, communities and Belize clean.

The activity was proudly sponsored by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Solid Waste Management, with the valued support of the Honorable Minister Orlando Habet and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ms. Milagro Matus. BSWaMA sincerely appreciates the Ministry’s continued commitment to environmental education and initiatives that invest in and empower Belize’s young people.

Special appreciation is extended to Mr. Anthony Morris, Coordinator of the San Ignacio Waste Warriors Summer Camp, whose dedication and hard work helped make the day a success. Mr. Morris ensured that the preparations, logistics and other arrangements were taken care of, helping to create a welcoming and enjoyable experience for our young participants.

We also extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the camp, as well as the parents and guardians who supported the initiative and allowed their children to be part of the Waste Warriors experience.

Most importantly, congratulations to our young Waste Warriors! We hope you continue to practice what you learned, share it with others and become champions for a cleaner and more sustainable Belize.

Safety and preparedness remain important priorities at the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA).

Our Operations Staff recently participated in Basic CPR and First Aid Training, facilitated by Mr. Terence Woodye of the Belize Red Cross. The training provided our team with practical knowledge and essential life-saving skills to respond effectively to medical emergencies and other crisis situations that may arise at our facilities.

Given the nature of solid waste management operations, our employees work in environments where being able to respond quickly, safely, and confidently during an emergency can make a significant difference. CPR and First Aid training strengthens our overall workplace safety while ensuring that staff members are better equipped to assist colleagues and members of the public until professional medical assistance arrives.

At BSWaMA, preparedness goes beyond having the right equipment and procedures in place it also means investing in our people. By continuously strengthening the skills and capacity of our team, we are building a safer and more resilient organization.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Terence Woodye and the Belize Red Cross for facilitating this important training and supporting our commitment to workplace safety and emergency preparedness.

WASTE WARRIORS SUMMER CAMP 2026 – MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

What an amazing day of learning, laughter, teamwork and environmental action! The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) successfully concluded its Waste Warriors Summer Camp 2026 at the Belmopan City Center, bringing together young environmental champions for a fun and educational experience focused on protecting Belize and managing our waste responsibly.

Throughout the day, our young Waste Warriors participated in interactive presentations, environmental games, hands-on activities and challenges designed to strengthen their understanding of responsible solid waste management. A major focus was placed on the 5Rs Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle showing our young participants that simple everyday actions can make a meaningful difference in their homes, schools and communities.

BSWaMA extends sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Solid Waste Management for its continued support of environmental education and youth engagement initiatives.

We are also grateful to the Belmopan City Council for facilitating the use of the Belmopan City Center and providing a welcoming space for our young participants to learn, interact and enjoy the day's activities.

A very special thank you goes to our JICA Volunteers, Sue and KiKi, for sharing their time, knowledge, creativity and enthusiasm with our young Waste Warriors. Their interactive participation added tremendous value to the programme and helped make the learning experience both fun and memorable.

We sincerely thank Mrs. Alejandra Pedraza of Recycle Organics for sharing her knowledge and helping our participants understand composting, organic waste management and the importance of turning organic waste into a valuable resource.

Our appreciation also goes to Ms. Shynia Wilson of the National Climate Change Center for educating the children about climate change and helping them understand the connection between their everyday actions and the protection of Belize's environment.

Special recognition goes to Ms. Delsie Dawson of Itz'at STEAM Academy, who did an outstanding job facilitating and educating our young Waste Warriors on the 5Rs and Solid Waste Management. Her energy, enthusiasm and child-friendly approach transformed important environmental concepts into fun and practical lessons that the children could easily understand and remember. Thank you, Ms. Dawson, for sharing your passion for education and for playing such an important role in making the camp a success!

We also extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents and guardians who supported the programme and entrusted their children to participate. Your support is invaluable because environmental education does not end when the camp finishes the lessons learned must continue at home, at school and throughout our communities.

And most importantly, CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR YOUNG WASTE WARRIORS!

On Friday, July 17, 2026, the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA), under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, successfully concluded the Closing Stakeholder Meeting for the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF) Technical Mission on Waste Management.

The meeting marked the culmination of a week long technical mission conducted from July 13–17, during which the Taiwan ICDF delegation worked alongside national stakeholders to assess Belize's solid and medical waste management systems and identify opportunities to strengthen the country's waste management infrastructure.

Throughout the mission, the delegation visited several key facilities across Belize, including:
Western Regional Hospital, Belmopan
Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital
Belize Waste Control Limited
Belize City Transfer Station
Regional Sanitary Landfill
Placencia Transfer Station
Punta Gorda Transfer Station

These site visits provided valuable insight into Belize's existing waste management systems while creating meaningful dialogue and knowledge exchange with local technical teams and stakeholders.

The Closing Stakeholder Meeting was honoured by the presence of Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, who reaffirmed the Government of Belize's commitment to strengthening sustainable waste management through innovation, collaboration, and strategic international partnerships.

The Ministry extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its continued friendship and unwavering support in advancing Belize's sustainable development goals. We also express our heartfelt gratitude to the Taiwan ICDF Technical Mission for sharing their expertise and engaging with stakeholders throughout the week.

Today, we take a journey back to Public Service Day 2013, where the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) participated in public outreach and education by showcasing a scale model of the Regional Sanitary Landfill (RSL) a major milestone in Belize’s movement toward improved and environmentally sound waste management.

During the event, Tyronne Chimilio, Public Relations Officer of the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority, engaged students, stakeholders, and members of the public, highlighting the importance of proper waste disposal, environmental responsibility, and the role of modern solid waste infrastructure in protecting Belize’s natural resources.

The scale model provided an opportunity for the public to better understand the operations and design of the Regional Sanitary Landfill located at Mile 24 on the George Price Highway, including how improved waste management systems contributed to a clean environment

More than a decade later, this moment reflects BSWaMA’s continued commitment to education, innovation, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable development. Public awareness has always been an essential part of transforming attitudes and inspiring positive environmental action.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) proudly celebrates the residents of Dangriga Town, the Culture Capital of Belize, who are embracing composting and demonstrating their commitment to a cleaner, greener future through the Recycle Organics Program.

Known for its rich Garifuna heritage, vibrant culture, and strong sense of community, Dangriga continues to demonstrate its dedication to progress not only in preserving tradition but also in protecting the environment. Residents who received compost bins through the program have been actively putting them to use, transforming everyday food scraps and organic materials into valuable compost for their homes and gardens.

We extend our congratulations to all participating households for your dedication and enthusiasm. Your efforts are helping to reduce organic waste, improve soil health, and promote sustainable practices that benefit both current and future generations.

Every compost bin being used represents a family making a conscious choice to care for the environment. Every banana peel, fruit waste, and yard clipping diverted from the waste stream contributes to a more sustainable Dangriga.

Together, we are turning waste into a resource, strengthening our communities, and building a cleaner Belize one compost bin at a time.
