Today, we take a journey back to Public Service Day 2013, where the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) participated in public outreach and education by showcasing a scale model of the Regional Sanitary Landfill (RSL) a major milestone in Belize’s movement toward improved and environmentally sound waste management.

During the event, Tyronne Chimilio, Public Relations Officer of the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority, engaged students, stakeholders, and members of the public, highlighting the importance of proper waste disposal, environmental responsibility, and the role of modern solid waste infrastructure in protecting Belize’s natural resources.

The scale model provided an opportunity for the public to better understand the operations and design of the Regional Sanitary Landfill located at Mile 24 on the George Price Highway, including how improved waste management systems contributed to a clean environment

More than a decade later, this moment reflects BSWaMA’s continued commitment to education, innovation, stakeholder engagement, and sustainable development. Public awareness has always been an essential part of transforming attitudes and inspiring positive environmental action.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) proudly celebrates the residents of Dangriga Town, the Culture Capital of Belize, who are embracing composting and demonstrating their commitment to a cleaner, greener future through the Recycle Organics Program.

Known for its rich Garifuna heritage, vibrant culture, and strong sense of community, Dangriga continues to demonstrate its dedication to progress not only in preserving tradition but also in protecting the environment. Residents who received compost bins through the program have been actively putting them to use, transforming everyday food scraps and organic materials into valuable compost for their homes and gardens.

We extend our congratulations to all participating households for your dedication and enthusiasm. Your efforts are helping to reduce organic waste, improve soil health, and promote sustainable practices that benefit both current and future generations.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) is proud to recognize the dedicated students and families participating in the Recycle Organics Program in Orange Walk Town.

We are delighted to see participants actively using their compost bins and applying the knowledge gained during the training sessions. Operated by the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA), the Regional Sanitary Landfill provides a controlled and environmentally responsible solution for the disposal of municipal solid waste generated across the country. Unlike open dumping, sanitary landfill operations are designed to minimize environmental impacts, reduce pollution, and safeguard our natural resources.

Every bag of waste properly disposed of every piece of litter placed in a bin, and every effort made to reduce, reuse, and recycle contributes to a cleaner Belize.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) is pleased to announce the successful distribution of 27 home composting bins to residents of Benque Viejo del Carmen as part of the ongoing Recycle Organics Program.

Participants not only received their composting bins but also took part in a practical training session designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully compost organic waste at home. Through composting, households can transform food waste and yard waste into nutrient rich compost while reducing the amount of waste requiring disposal.

A special commendation is extended to Anthony Mai Jr., Solid Waste Technician, who facilitated the distribution and training session. His dedication and commitment to community outreach continue to play an important role in the success of the Recycle Organics Program throughout Belize.

We would also like to thank the Benque Viejo Town Council, the Recycle Organics Team, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), ImplementaSur, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, and the residents of Benque Viejo for their support and participation in this initiative.

Every composting bin distributed represents another household taking positive action to reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to a healthier environment. Today, the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) was honored to participate in the Educational Biodiversity Fair held at the Victor Galvez Auditorium in San Ignacio under the theme, "Acting Locally for Global Impact: Our Culture, Our Biodiversity, Our Impact."

Representing BSWaMA were Public Relations Officer Tyronne Chimilio, along with Solid Waste Technicians Anthony Mai Jr. and Jonathan Pook, who engaged with students through interactive discussions and educational displays focused on proper waste management, environmental sustainability, recycling, composting, and the important role each citizen plays in protecting Belize’s natural resources.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the National Biodiversity Office for the kind invitation and for organizing such a meaningful event that brought together organizations committed to environmental management and education. Events like these provide valuable opportunities to inspire young minds and empower students to become champions for a cleaner and more sustainable Belize.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) continues to strengthen collaboration with municipalities as preparations advance for the opening of the Orange Walk Transfer Station.

Recently, Tyronne Chimilio, Public Relations Officer; Mr. Rogelio Pop, Operations Manager; and Mr. Jonothan Pook, Solid Waste Technician, met with members of the Orange Walk Town Council to discuss operational plans and the future management of the facility.

Representing the Orange Walk Town Council were Mayor Ladrick Sheppard, Councilor of Sanitation Joesie Cantun Castillo, City Administrator Mr. Alberto Guerra, Sanitation Supervisors Mr. Baizar and Mr. Urbina, along with other key personnel committed to improving waste management services within the municipality.

A special acknowledgement and sincere thanks is extended to Hon. Ramiro Ramirez, Minister of State in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Solid Waste Management, who attended the meeting and provided valuable guidance, insight, and support as discussions continue toward the successful operationalization of the facility.

The Orange Walk Transfer Station will play an important role in strengthening the country’s solid waste management system by allowing for the controlled collection and transfer of waste from Orange Walk Town and surrounding villages. Transfer stations serve as central hubs where waste is temporarily consolidated before being transported in bulk to The Regional Sanitary Landfill, reducing transportation costs, improving efficiency, and minimizing environmental impacts.

The establishment of this facility represents another significant step toward cleaner communities, improved sanitation services, and a more sustainable Belize. Through continued partnership, planning, and commitment, BSWaMA and the Orange Walk Town Council remain dedicated to enhancing waste management practices for the benefit of residents in Orange Walk Town and surrounding villages.

Dangriga Residents Take the Next Step in Composting Through the Recycle Organics Program

On Saturday, May 23, 2026, residents of Dangriga Town officially received their home composting bins as part of the continued expansion of the Recycle Organics Program across Belize.

The distribution and training session brought together residents eager to learn more about composting and sustainable waste management practices that can positively impact their homes and communities. Participants were guided on how to properly compost food scraps and organic materials, helping to reduce waste while creating nutrient-rich compost for gardens and landscaping.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority extends sincere appreciation to Mayor Robert Mariano, Councilor Martha Robinson, the Dangriga Town Council, the Recycle Organics Team, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, and especially the residents of Dangriga Town for their participation and support of this important initiative.

Dangriga, We’re Ready for You!

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority (BSWaMA) team has officially packed and prepared all materials for the next distribution under the Recycle Organics Program, and we are excited to head to Dangriga Town tomorrow afternoon to distribute home composting bins to successful participants.

Residents participating in the program will receive their compost bins along with practical training on how to properly compost organic waste at home, helping to reduce waste and promote more sustainable environmental practices within the community.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority continues to promote environmental responsibility and proper waste management practices across Belize!

Our Solid Waste Technicians, Anthony Mai Jr. and Jonathan Pook, traveled to Burrell Boom Village to distribute two waste disposal drums to Burrell Boom Methodist Primary School. The drums were officially handed over to Principal Carololle Ysaguirre-Staine as part of ongoing efforts to encourage cleaner and healthier school environments.

These drums will play an important role in promoting proper waste disposal among students and staff, while also helping to teach children the importance of not littering and taking pride in keeping their school and community clean. Educating our young people about responsible waste management today helps to build and maintain a habitual practice of keeping their environment clean.

The Belize Solid Waste Management Authority extends sincere appreciation to the Belize Department of the Environment - DOE for sponsoring the drums through their “Our BELIZE, Our Responsibility – Bin It Campaign.” Partnerships such as these continue to strengthen environmental awareness and community action throughout the country.
