Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of collisions on Ontario roads. Taking your eyes off the road for just a few seconds can have life-changing consequences for you, your passengers, and everyone around you.

This Civic Holiday long weekend, members of the Aylmer Police Service conducted proactive traffic enforcement focused on the "Big Four".

šŸš”Enforcement Results:
ā€¢ 15 speeding offences
ā€¢ 6 roadside screening tests conducted
ā€¢ 2 careless driving charges
ā€¢ 2 seatbelt offences
ā€¢ 1 fail to stop at a yellow light
ā€¢ 1 fail to stop at a stop sign
ā€¢ 1 improper stop at a traffic control sign

Our officers were out throughout the weekend to help keep our roads safe for everyone. While we are pleased that many motorists made safe choices, these enforcement results serve as a reminder that unsafe driving behaviours continue to put lives at risk.

Thank you to everyone who drove responsibly and helped make this Civic Holiday weekend a safer one. Let's continue working together to keep Aylmer's roads safe every day.

Media Release August 4, 2026

Arrest

A 38 year old Aylmer woman has been arrested and charged with theft. The charges stem from an earlier investigation where the female had stolen from a downtown business. The woman was located at the Elgin County Court house on an unrelated matter where she was arrested by APS officers without incident. She was later released on an undertaking with conditions and future court date.

Bicycle Patrol Leads to Arrest

A 16 year old youth was arrested on July 28th around 2 pm when an APS officer on bicycle patrol observed the youth in the skate park. The youth, bound by conditions of non-association with persons under the age of thirteen, was found in breach. The youth was held for a court appearance and later released on a recognizance.

Impaired Driver

Aylmer Police were called to a report of an impaired driver by an off duty police officer on July 29th, at 430pm. The driver, was located at a residence on Melanie Drive where he was taken into custody. Tests back at the station resulted in readings over 3.5x the legal limit. As a result, a 41 year old Aylmer man has been charged with impaired operation and having a blood alcohol concentration in excess of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The accused was later released from custody on an appearance notice, his licence suspended for 90 days and vehicle impounded for 7 days.

Motor Vehicle Collision

Aylmer Police responded to a two vehicle collision on Myrtle Street on July 30th at 1115am. Investigation determined a vehicle was reversing from a parking spot into the path of a northbound vehicle which resulted in the collision and significant damage. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. As a result an 89 year old Aylmer woman has been charged with failing to yield from private drive under the Highway Traffic Act.

Fail to Comply

A 15 year old youth has been arrested after APS officers on patrol located him out contrary to a judicial interim release order curfew. Officers located the accused on July 30th after the 9pm curfew and placed him under arrest. The accused was held for a bail hearing and released by the courts.

Single Vehicle Collision

A single vehicle collision occurred on Talbot St near Caverly road on August 1st around 220am. APS responded to the call and located a vehicle which had struck a hydro poll and sustained significant damage however the driver was uninjured. After ruling out alcohol as a factor, officers have charged a 33 year old Aylmer woman with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

7 Day Suspension

On August 1st, at 730pm an APS officer on patrol stopped a speeding vehicle on Talbot Street West. When speaking with the driver, the officer detected alcohol and administered a roadside screening test which resulted in roadside suspension for registering in the warn range. The 31 year old Delhi man was also issued two tickets and licence suspended for 7 days.

Assault

A 17 year old has been arrested and charged after he is alleged to have assaulted a staff member at a local community home. The accused who resides at the residence, is alleged to have punched the staff member in the face. The victim did not require medical attention. As a result, the youth was arrested and released on August 2nd and will appear in youth court later this month in answer to the charge.

Warrant Arrest

A 23 year old St Thomas man has been arrested on an outstanding provincial offences act warrant. The accused was arrested on August 3rd and later released with a future court date.

The Aylmer Police Service is proud to share that for 2025 the Crime Severity Index (CSI) shows positive results for the Town of Aylmer, reflecting the Service's ongoing commitment to crime reduction, public safety, and community-focused policing.
The Crime Severity Index measures both the frequency and seriousness of police-reported crime across Canada.

These results reflect the combined efforts of officers, civilian staff, and the many community partners who work together every day to keep Aylmer a safe place to live, work, and visit. Through proactive patrols, focused investigations, crime prevention initiatives, and collaboration with local organizations, the Service continues to address crime while building strong relationships within the community.

ā€œThis positive data supports the notion that community based municipal police services like ours, are able to focus on the specific issues and needs within our town and effectively deal with them. I am proud of the great work our members are doing and that is certainly reflected within these statisticsā€ said Chief Kyle Johnstone.

Yesterday we had an officer patrolling the streets and parks a little differentlyā€¦.

On a bike! šŸš²

A/Sgt. Shaw ditched the cruiser and upgraded his ride to the APS bicycle. Geared up in all of his safety gear he toured around town making sure all of his fellow bikers are safe.

If you see any of our officers around town on the bike be sure to give a šŸ‘‹!
