When I’m feel like I need to ground myself, I remember advice from an elder encouraging me to call on my grandmothers & ancestors to be with me. I have done this many times ... before interviews, giving testimony before senates and committees. I always ask for guidance so I can represent our nation respectfully as the work we undertake is important and reflects on the collective. #Haitzaqv #makingchanges

Our Heiltsuk members, were racially profiled & handcuffed last December after trying to open a bank account in Vancouver. What happened is devastating, but a reality of the spectrum of racism that Indigenous people face in Canada everyday. As a leader, I believe we all must stand together against racism.

It’s with honour & gratitude that I accept my nomination for re-election as Chief Councillor of the Heiltsuk Nation.
I spent much time thinking about the leaders I have been privileged to work with and their invaluable teachings.
I believe in our Haitzaqv sovereignty. I believe that the courage, strength and determination we feel in our hearts is our sovereignty and is a part of us.
As your chief councillor, I am committed to continue the important work of rebuilding our nationhood, to work with our leadership and members to reset our relationship with govt ~ on a nation to nation foundation.
Together, we will realize that “reconciliation” is the vision of a prosperous community...as a self determined nation and people!

When the Nathan E. Stewart oil spill happened in 2016, we experienced first-hand what passes for a ‘world class’ spill response. We waited for hours for a team to arrive, only to have them deploy defective equipment, in unfamiliar conditions, without safety gear or training for volunteer responders. We have been working towards the vision of strengthening oil spill prevention and clean up on the central coast with an Indigenous Marine Response Centre.

Moving Forward Together

Protecting our Territory and Rights with Haitzaqv Strength and Resilience.

I will fiercely protect our Territory and Rights.

I believe in revitalizing our Haitzaqv laws and deploying them to protect our Territory and Rights.

We will stand against any past and future threat to our Territory and Rights. We will use all our strength to prevent a repeat of the past destruction of our people and our way of life. We use every tool to turn around the destruction of the past. We will never give-up or give-in.

Pls take a minute to read my Biography as I am running for Re-Election for Chief Councilor of the Heiltsuk Nation.

Standing up for Heiltsuk.

Last May 2015 HTC and Hemas met with Bill Gallagher author of "Resource Rulers Fortune and Folly on Canada's Road to Resources". His book tracks the rise of native empowerment and indigenous legal winning streaks in the resource sector. In January he directed a tweet at Vancouver Board of Trade saying this interview is 'required listening' - the interview is regarding the Nations joint herring management plan. We are #heiltsukstrong

On January 18th, 2016, I was interviewed by CBC Radio about the success of the joint herring management plan between Heiltsuk and DFO. Listen to the interview! Read the CBC newspaper article here.…

Heiltsuk are exercising sovereignty.

Remaking the Tools of Governance - Colonial Legacies and Indigenous Solutions-

There are necessary prior steps for nation-building, Heiltsuk are embracing this full-on as we uphold institutional development within our integrated resource management department. It is all interwoven with our vision of self-determination. I raise my hands to our people who identified this department as a nation priority during a community think-tank forum two decades ago.

Our Shores for Future Generations
Reflection on our Nations stand against Enbridge

Since time immemorial we have relied upon our sea resources for food, our livelihood, and our overall way of life. Having access to the sea and its resources is crucial to our wellbeing. We do not consent in any way, shape or form to tanker traffic from the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline travelling through our waters.

On June 17, 2014, the Governor in Council approved the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tanker project. The Enbridge pipeline proposes shipment of diluted bitumen in supertankers that would travel through Heiltsuk’s coastal waters. In 2014, Heiltsuk, alongside eight other BC First Nations, sought and was granted leave to judicially review the Enbridge pipeline project. Heiltsuk brought Enbridge to court and asked the Federal Court of Appeal to rule in our favour regarding the Crown’s failure to consult and accommodate.

We delivered our primary legal argument to the Court on October 1, 2015. This video was at a Solidarity Rally outside the Court of Appeal in Vancouver. We stood united supporting our Hemas and people in saying NO to the Enbridge pipeline so that our future generations would not bear the grave risks of this project.

Our Hemas are a source of strength and wisdom and have shown steadfast determination to keep our territory safe from the risks of the Enbridge pipeline and tanker project. I was honoured to speak alongside our Hemas at the Solidarity Rally. If re-elected Cheif Councilor, I will remain committed to fighting for access and jurisdiction over our coastal waters ensuring future generations remain the stewards of our lands, water and resources.

Heiltsuk First Nation stand against secretive DFO Herring Row Fishery in their territory

Protection of our Aboriginal Title and Rights
Reflections on the events leading to the DFO Standoff 2015

Last year, after committing to in-season communications, DFO authorized a herring seine fishery at night without communicating to the Heiltsuk. The herring gillnet fleet was in Heiltsuk Territory and every indication was that DFO would allow another irresponsible and illegal stealth fishery.

This video was taken at a small but impactful rally outside Canfisco. I remember this day clearly - like it happened yesterday. I travelled to Vancouver for a meeting after just experiencing the reckless Spiller fishery. This rally was organized to put DFO and industry on notice that another covert fishery would not happen - not on our watch.

Our laws tell us both of our ownership of and responsibility to these lands and their resources. As Heiltsuk people, we upheld our responsibilities and stood together firm in our convictions. I will always carry these memories, drawing on them for fortitude and inner-strength.

There is a clear connection between our economic vision and interdependence of a healthy environment, and as we work towards a sustainable economy, we will continue to uphold our laws.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all the Heiltsuk people, to the Hemas and to the Tribal Council. Our united stand proves we can address any obstacle in front of us.

GBR Land Use Order (draft #1).mp4

As much as we are defined by our culture we are defined by our territory, they are connected. The interrelationship of our-ways and land spans over the millennia. In 2005 our challenge was implementing the Heiltsuk Land Use Plan. HTC, Hemas and Heiltsuk people, have been working to implement our plan in alignment with our values.

This video shares perspectives and highlights of the Reconciliation Protocol Agreement (RPA) with the BC government (signed 2009). The RPA has two main goals:

1) Create an efficient collaborative approach to land and resource Engagement and decision-making, and
2) Develop and implement resource revenue sharing and other economic policies that enable First Nations to make progress toward socioeconomic objectives.

The implementation of the RPA has resulted in the negotiation of several land use agreements including the Great Bear Rainforest Land Use Order.

HEILTSUK HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LAND USE ORDER

The Land Use Order contains several components specific to Heiltsuk members:

• $150,000 in Targeted Training Funds (Forestry) over the next 3 years
• Re-charting Process to ensure Heiltsuk Coastal Forest Products (HCFP) gains access to operating areas with viable wood fiber
• New Forest Tenure to increase HCFP’s operations by an additional 235,000 m3
• Tenure Restructure to enable better forest management for HCFP
• 50,000 m3 Forest License to help complete the Bighouse (this is a substantive contribution, conservatively once the fibre is sold, it has a cash value of $800,000-1M)
• Carbon Credits - increase in ownership of production and sales, and for a longer time period (2035)

We are strengthened by our land, it keeps us strong.
