Early 2000s Fashion Really Had Us

That viral “I’m this old” meme is an old internet throwback, not a recent photo or a claim about the girls’ current ages. The exact original posting date is difficult to verify, but the meme has circulated for years and was recently preserved in a 2025 roundup of classic memes. The photo itself fits the era it is being used to reference: colorful crochet ponchos with fringe were genuinely part of the early 2000s fashion conversation.

And honestly, the nostalgia checks out. Ponchos were a major fashion trend around 2004, appearing in mainstream fashion coverage and on celebrities, while crochet was also being pushed as a key look for 2005. Today, Y2K fashion is having another moment, with early 2000s accessories and silhouettes returning across social media and fashion circles. So yes, we laughed at the ponchos then, but somehow they are starting to look fashionable again.
