Although I have never been a fan of speed cameras, I cannot ignore that they served one clear purpose: protecting our most vulnerable. While some municipalities may have turned this tool into a cash grab, the fact remains that in school zones and residential areas, it slowed drivers down and helped keep children safe.
To outright ban this system instead of amending it is a mistake that exposes the Ontario government to real risk.
When children start getting hurt because the system was dismantled in favor of protecting speeders instead of protecting kids, the liability will not fall on municipalities....it will fall squarely on the province.
Putting Politics before public safety... the only caveate to this is the province will be providing funding to help put in other speed mitigations which is essentially tax payers paying for it. Either way, whatever keeps the children in pur most vulnerable areas safe...is the best solution.
