There is so much talent in our communities. Sometimes, the opportunity just needs to be more accessible.

For people with disabilities, barriers to employment can show up in different ways, from navigating the hiring process to accessing the right accommodations and supports once they’re in the workplace.

This October, Disability Employment Awareness Month is an opportunity to keep those conversations moving forward.

Because inclusive employment isn’t about lowering expectations. It’s about making sure people have the opportunity to bring their skills, experience and strengths to the workplace, and that employers aren’t missing out on great people because of barriers that can be addressed.

Sometimes that starts with a conversation. Asking what someone needs. Being open to a different approach. Connecting someone with the right support or resource.

When we make it easier for people to participate, we create more opportunities for people to build careers, for employers to find the talent they need and for our communities to benefit from both.

Finding the right path to employment can look different for everyone.

For some people, it means building new skills or exploring a different career. For others, the challenge may be transportation, childcare, housing, confidence after time away from work, or simply not knowing which services or resources are available.

Those barriers can make the next step feel much harder than it needs to be.

Having the right information, connections and support can help people understand their options, work through challenges and move toward employment with more confidence.

And when that next step leads to work, the impact can go well beyond the job itself. It can bring greater stability, renewed confidence and a stronger sense of what’s possible next.

That’s an important part of workforce development: helping people connect with the right opportunities and supports to move forward.

You’re invited to join us for an upcoming information session about the new Workforce Advisory Committee being formed under Alberta Employment Connect.

We know some of the most valuable insight comes from people with firsthand experience navigating employment related challenges. This committee is intended to create space for those voices, perspectives, and lived experiences to help shape how employment support is designed, delivered, and improved over time.

We’re looking to connect with individuals who have navigated barriers to employment, supported others facing barriers to employment, or have personal or professional experience supporting individuals through employment related challenges.

• 2:00–3:00 p.m. MST
• Virtual via Zoom

During the session, we’ll provide an overview of:
• What the Workforce Advisory Committee is
• What participation would involve
• How member feedback will help inform and strengthen services
• Honorariums and expected time commitments
• Next steps and opportunities to get involved

Participation would involve quarterly meetings and occasional opportunities to provide feedback throughout the year. Honorariums will be provided in recognition of members’ time, knowledge, and lived experience.

Today is Pink Shirt Day.

It began with a simple act of standing beside someone who was being bullied. That small decision grew into a movement that reminds us how much our everyday actions matter.

Bullying can quietly erode confidence and belonging. And those are the very things people need in order to grow, take risks, and move forward.

Empowering people and communities means creating spaces where individuals feel safe, supported, and valued. It means noticing when someone might need encouragement. It means speaking up. It means choosing kindness in the small, everyday moments.

Pink Shirt Day brings visibility and energy to this conversation.

What matters just as much is how we carry that intention into our daily work and into our communities, in how we listen, how we respond, and how we show up for one another.

Kindness is something we practice together.
