The Chestermere Eastside Bird-Walkers gathered together for a walk & bird of Dawson's Landing Eco Park. With the water at lower levels, much shoreline was exposed for shorebirds to explore. The park is likened to a kidney filter system, complete with a very thick area of bullrushes to do much of the filtering. On this day the birds were busy and two great blue herons got into a major brawl, much to the amazement of the group. Take time to tour the Eco-Park. Seating is excellent as is the viewing.

Birding and walking are two great pleasure in life that can be enjoyed by anyone at almost any age. Continuing skill development in bird identification, noting habitat and the importance of wetlands, the Eastside Bird-Walkers group visited Ralph Klein Environmental Park Monday morning. The Eastside Bird-Walkers toured the unamed storm pond south of Rainbow Falls. Althugh the main water body was void of birds or wildfowl, the tiny slough at the west end hid all of the ducks in the area. Is it time to name this storm pond?

To continually improve birding skills the Eastside Bird-Walkers headed to nearby Elliston Park for a 3km hike around the lake, taking in the sites and identifying good habitat for birds. Many were amazed at the size of this storm pond.

A late July visit to Trennen Park Pond was very enjoyable. The Eastside Bird-Walkers group of 7 spotted 15 species, learned about the presence of an owl and great blue heron, enjoyed the weather and conversation. It's great to see several people in Chestermere using a wonderfully set up storm pond and park

The Chestermere Whitecappers "Eastside Bird-Walkers" enjoyed a truly purple martin experience this morning with Gerry Evans. Group members had a chance to see martins still in their eggs, right through to the adults. An engaging host, Gerry shared much of his experience and knowledge about this member of the swallow family. The importance of the Kinniburgh storm pond to support an entire food chain and a rare bird species cannot be underestimated. (Photos by Elaine Cassidy)

An update on the incredible success of the purple martin and tree swallow population living at the Kinniburgh Storm Pond. You'll recall the story earlier in The Anchor about Mr. Gerry Evans' martin colony. As of Saturday, June 27th, the tree swallow nest boxes will be home to potentially 12 new members of the species. The purple martins initally laid 82 eggs which were reduced to 74 due to their destruction by house sparrows. More eggs are being laid and things look promising. Interestingly, the materials used in the martin condo units are different. Mud, pine needles and minimal grass are "new" materials used this spring, indicating the martins nested in previous years in different locations. Both swallow species are insectivores, chasing mosquitos, midges and many other insects for food. They are truly a most valuable asset in our world and community.

Take time to walk past Rainbow Falls and head to the storm pond. The pond is well designed with good setbacks for birds...

Take time to walk past Rainbow Falls and head to the storm pond. The pond is well designed with good setbacks for birds and wildfowl. Many homeowners have made their yards bird friendly as well. Scenic, filled with life, enjoy a part of Chestermere's designed wetlands.

If you are needing a pleasant, beautiful location for a summer walk, you may wish to head over to Dawson's Landing, just west and nroth a bit from No Frills. The water bodies are filled and a vareity of wildfowl and the odd shorebird are present. As the vegetation matures, the site will only be more attractive for people and birds.

One of Chestermere's well designed stormponds is Trennen Park Pond, located across the street from Rainbow Falls Elementary School. With natural cover along the shore, treed areas, and some feeders, no less than 16 species came by for a visit. Need a walk? Love nature? Check on Trennen Pond.
