CLOSURE NOTICE – LOWER TRURO SPRING

The Municipality of Colchester will be officially decommissioning the Lower Truro Spring on, or after, June 15th, 2026. The decision to close the spring was made due to health, safety, and liability concerns at the existing site.

Following the closure, residents are encouraged to transition to alternative water sources, such as the new Public Water Station at the Fundy Discovery Site, located at 84 Tidal Bore Road, Lower Truro.

Things are tight.
It’s time to start thinking about a new station.
Our current building has been the center of the community for a long time, but it’s time to expand.
Before we build we need land.
Close to the village center is preferred.
Reasonably we would like to be between 8361 Hwy 215 (camp ground), 9281 Hwy 215 ( Beaties old garage) and 327 Cedar Road ( Richard MacKenzies farm).
Approx 3 acres, more or less, would be preferred.
If you are considering selling, or know someone, we would love to talk.
Feel free to reach.

As we head into June, our local farmers are pulling long hours.
Over the next few weeks, you might occasionally see one of our members responding to the station, or pulling up near a scene, in a large farm tractor still hooked up to a seeder or a spreader. (as shown on Friday)

Our volunteers are your neighbours. When an emergency happens, there isn't time to drive back to the yard, unhook a massive piece of machinery, pack up, and switch to a personal truck. Minutes matter.

Training is constantly evolving, and we are excited to add a new tool to help our members better understand fire behavior and improve firefighter safety thanks to contributions from the Nova Scotia Firefighters 50-50

Thanks to the incredible generosity and skill of one of our own members — and Blair's Custom Metals — we now have a custom-built mock metal house that allows us to safely create controlled fire conditions in different rooms. This training prop gives us the opportunity to study smoke flow paths, heat movement, and how fire spreads throughout a structure in real time.

One of the most important lessons this training demonstrates is the impact of controlling airflow. Modern firefighting tactics focus heavily on limiting oxygen feeding the fire. Something as simple as keeping a bedroom door closed can dramatically slow fire spread and reduce heat and smoke damage.

Years ago, many people were used to seeing firefighters immediately smashing windows during fires. While ventilation absolutely still has its place and is sometimes necessary, today’s fire science has taught us that uncontrolled ventilation can intensify fire conditions by introducing more oxygen.

We are proud to continue advancing our training and bringing modern fire science into our department to better protect both our firefighters and our community.

Our hearts are in the Annapolis Valley as we hear of this tragic news

When a loss like this happens, the impact is felt in every single station across Nova Scotia. As volunteer firefighters, we share a unique bond. We answer the same calls, face the same risks, and share the same fundamental drive to protect our communities. When one of us falls, we all grieve.

On May 3, Chief Trevor Forbes and Deputy Chief Colie Kent were honoured to receive, in hand from Ruth Sandeson, the original letter and dollar bill exchanged between the Brigade’s charter members in 1971 to obtain the land on which our Lower Truro hall currently stands from the late Alfred "Al" (2002) and Ruth Sandeson.

This special piece of our Brigade’s history serves as a reminder of the community support and generosity that helped establish the foundation of our department more than 50 years ago.

Ruth, one of our area’s most senior residents, will celebrate her 102nd birthday on June 16. We are incredibly grateful to her and the Sandeson family for preserving and sharing this important part of our history.

Also joining in the celebration were children of Al and Ruth: Mike (with wife Laurie), Richard, and Nancy.

Thank you to the Sandeson family for helping keep our history alive for future generations.

REMINDER that today , Tuesday May 19, (until May 29), that exit 15 where you leave the westbound 104 and hit the 102 south to exit and head to Truro/Halifax will be closed to traffic for roadwork.
You will have to keep going on the 104 to the Debert exit, turn around, and come back... or option 2 is get off at Valley and drive through Bible Hill/Truro.
Follow this fancy map with the cool arrows we made, if it helps.
