ʔaq̓am Flood Watch Update
– May 29, 2026 @ 15:00 (3:00 PM)

ʔaq̓am Council and Administration is aware of the Flood Watch issued for the East Kootenay Region.

Due to high water levels, premade sandbags will be available at the end of the pavement (Lot 31, across from Chris Joseph’s). The Operations team will have a truck and trailer with premade sandbags if delivery is required over the weekend.

Community members are welcome to self-fill sandbags to take for yourself or stack for other community members in preparation of rising water levels.

Staff continue to monitor the flood marker stakes. A daily update will be provided here on facebook and on the website (www.aqam.net).

Fast-flowing rivers pose increased risk to safety. Stay away from rivers and river banks, which can be unstable. Never drive through floodwaters, as unseen hazards and current can be life threatening.

For immediate concerns or questions please call Nicole Halasz: 1 (236) 703-9541

We recommend signing up for RDEK’s Voyent Alert for emergency updates via text or phone: https://www.rdek.bc.ca/departments/protectiveservices/emergencyinfo/evacuation_notification_system/

For provincial updates on the Flood Watch, please visit https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/event/flood-watch-columbia-kootenay-28may26/

NOTE: our facebook inbox is not regularly monitored. Please reach out to the staff listed above.

With flood watches and high streamflow advisories in effect across ɁamakɁis Ktunaxa, stay informed with the latest information on river conditions, flood watches, emergency preparedness, road impacts and local updates from the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK).

Stay safe, avoid fast-flowing waterways and be prepared for changing conditions as snowmelt and heavy rainfall continue through the weekend.

For current updates, visit the RDEK's Emergency Information page and follow their social media channels.

REGIONAL FLOOD & WILDFIRE UPDATE (posted: May 28.26 9:50pm)

A FLOOD WATCH has been issued for the East Kootenay by the BC River Forecast Centre.

The forecast is calling for potential rainfall across the region of 40mm-80mm between Friday and Monday, while the Elk Valley may see 60mm-over 100mm.

The potential for localized flooding impacts has increased substantially heading into the weekend. Those in low-lying or flood prone areas should take steps to protect their home/property.

A number of self-fill sandbag stations have been set up. To view the list of locations: https://www.rdek.bc.ca/departments/protectiveservices/emergencyinfo/

Sand and empty bags are provided at each site. Please bring your own shovel and gloves. To view a video on how to sandbag: https://youtu.be/exb2iUgH8cI?si=obKOor6qghfm-JGv

The public is encouraged to be extremely cautious around all local waterways as sudden, unpredictable changes are possible and creek/riverbanks can be highly unstable.

St. Mary Forest Service Road is closed beyond the 44.1km mark due to a washout. Please avoid this area until further notice as further failures or erosion are possible.
o To learn the latest status of FSR closures: https://tinyurl.com/mr3np64h

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit will have resources ready to respond if local roads or highways are impacted. For the latest on road conditions: https://www.drivebc.ca

The Regional Emergency Operations Centre has been activated so that resources are ready to act quickly in the event of flooding. The RDEK’s Flood Response Unit is also monitoring conditions and emergency program personnel are connecting with the BC River Forecast Centre and Environment Canada regularly.

📞 To report wide-spread flooding, please call the 24-hour reporting line at 250-489-9677 (EMERGENCY LINE only).

🔥REGIONAL FIRE UPDATE:

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to 2 fires in the Bloom Creek area (approx 26km W of Newgate).
o N10435 is an estimated 65ha.
o A 6ha fire nearby is being held and not expected to grow further.

To report wildfires, use the BC Wildfire app or call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.
