Paving of First Street will take place on Tuesday, August 18 and Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

This will involve a full road closure of First Street between Penrith Avenue and Windermere Avenue on August 18. Traffic will be detoured to Second Street. There may be periods of single lane alternating traffic permitted through the construction area. On August 19 there will be minor traffic disruptions in the construction area.

Traffic control personnel will be on site along with road closure and detour signage. Please proceed with caution through this detour and obey all personnel and signage. This work is weather dependent.

A campfire ban will take effect at noon on Friday, August 14, in the Village of Cumberland and the Cumberland fire protection area, which includes
🏕Cumberland Lake Park campsite
🏕Courtenay and District Fish and Game campsite
🚜Minto, Happy Valley and parts of Royston.

The campfire ban is in response to current wildfire risk conditions and follows campfire bans already in place in other Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) fire protection areas.

All 2026 recreational burning permits are cancelled during this campfire ban.

The campfire ban does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane, or briquettes, or to portable campfire devices that use briquettes, liquid, or gaseous fuel, provided they are approved by the Canadian Standards Association or Underwriters Laboratories of Canada and the flame height is less than 15 centimetres.

A big win for the long term resilience of Cumberland!

The Village of Cumberland is receiving over $2,700,000 through the Strategic Priorities Fund to support the replacement of the No. 2 Dam and spillway.

“This funding couldn't come at a more important time for Cumberland,” says Mayor Vickey Brown. “The No. 2 Dam is a piece of infrastructure our community has relied on for generations, and upgrading it means our residents can count on safe, reliable drinking water for decades to come. I want to thank the Union of BC Municipalities and the Strategic Priorities Fund for recognizing not just the value of this project, but the value of communities like ours. Our Council pushed hard to secure this support, meeting several times with both our MP Gord Johns and MLA Josie Osborne. I'm proud of the work that went into making it happen. This is a win for the long-term resilience of Cumberland."

The Strategic Priorities Fund is a federally funded program that supports infrastructure projects that are beyond the financial capacity of a single local government fund, under the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) Community stream in BC.

The heat warning continues. A ridge of high pressure is bringing high temperatures to the region. Daytime highs are expected to be in the low 30s with overnight lows in the mid teens.

A gradual cooling trend will begin Thursday.

🌡 A Yellow Heat Warning is in effect for the Comox Valley.

A Yellow Heat Warning means daytime and overnight temperatures will be unusually high for at least two consecutive days and may pose a moderate health risk, particularly for people who are more sensitive to heat.

Take steps now to stay cool:
☀️ Avoid direct sun during the hottest part of the day.
🌳 Seek shade or spend time in cool, air-conditioned spaces.
💧 Drink water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty.

The annual Western Toad migration has now reached the boundaries of the Cumberland Community Forest Park.

The Village is working with the United Riders of Cumberland and the Cumberland Community Forest Society to provide community updates on migration routes, educate the public, and move signage around to the affected areas in the park.

Trail closures, erected barriers, and temporary bridges are used to provide the tiny toadlets time to complete their migration with as little disturbance as possible so please plan your biking and hiking routes accordingly and respect all signage in the area.

These efforts are in concert with a voluntary closure of the Perseverance Creek Potholes, which remains in effect during the toad migration.
