There has been a lot of significant news over the past couple of months, but this month I'd like to draw your attention to the issue of food security and what Team Carney is doing to help mitigate risks, reduce costs for consumers, and support Canada's farming sector.

On June 11, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada released the new National Food Security Strategy (NFSS), followed by a news release from the Prime Ministers office.

and

The strategy aims to strengthen Canada's food system, improve our self-reliance, and create new opportunities for Canadian farmers and food processors - both at home and in international markets.
Some of the key initiatives highlighted at the launch include:
๐๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: Canada's grocery market is dominated by a small number of large chains that have significant influence over pricing and product availability. By encouraging greater competition throughout the food supply chain, the government hopes to increase consumer choice while helping keep food prices more affordable.
A new fund through Farm Credit Canada will help expand Canada's food processing capacity, assist small and medium-sized agricultural businesses in upgrading equipment, and support innovation in growing and processing products that have traditionally been limited by our climate.
๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ซ๐๐ ๐ญ๐๐ฉ๐: Reducing unnecessary regulatory barriers for farmers and food producers should help speed up approvals and make it easier for Canadian agriculture to respond to changing market conditions and new opportunities.

One sentence in the strategy has generated some discussion within our local riding association:
โ...protect Canadaโs food security and support economic growth; new powers would allow for the temporary use of certain pesticides under specific conditions where the government considers it necessary to protect Canada's food security or economic securityโ.
Many of us here on the Island care deeply about protecting our soil, waterways, and limited freshwater resources. While the language refers to temporary and specific circumstances, it will be important to ensure these powers are used carefully, transparently, and only when genuinely necessary.
If you share these concerns, I encourage you to respectfully let them be known to The Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food ( [email protected] ). Constructive feedback from Canadians has influenced government policy before, and thoughtful public engagement continues to matter.
