On May 6, Alberta Municipalities hosted a webinar with staff from Alberta Municipal Affairs, Alberta Education and Childcare, and Alberta Infrastructure to explain to our members recent changes introduced through Bills 50 and 51, related to school sites.

The webinar saw a strong level of engagement, and the volume of questions highlighted the significant interest municipalities have in understanding how these changes may impact planning, servicing, land ownership, and future school development processes.

We submitted the outstanding questions to the relevant ministries for follow-up. We will share responses and further information with members as soon as it becomes available.

‘It is a great opportunity to meet with people from other municipalities that you may not normally encounter. As the world changes and we become more and more aware of the risks municipalities face, it is great to be able to discuss how other municipalities are handling the additional tasks, costs, risks, etc. The topics are relevant and engaging. Well worth the cost of admission.’ - 2025 Public Risk Conference Attendee

Last month, ABmunis’ Board Director David Sharun and CEO Dana Mackie visited the Town of Bonnyville. We always appreciate the opportunity to connect with our members. It is crucial for us to hear about local priorities and to share the work ABmunis is undertaking to help with local and provincial challenges. Initiatives like Property Taxes Reimagined can help our members across the province.

Thank you to the mayors and full council in Bonnyville for your leadership, partnership, and ongoing commitment to your communities.

Growing communities lead to rising demand, but resources remain limited.

In the last 5 years, Alberta’s population has grown by over half a million, but the public infrastructure funding has not kept up. Increasing service demands may require municipalities to raise property taxes, while the province’s property tax increase is being applied to fund the operating costs of K-12 education.

We need to have a conversation about how Alberta's local community services are funded. ABmunis' Property Taxes Reimagined initiative has been created to help Albertans understand how property taxes are structured.

ABmunis’ CEO Dana Mackie and Board Director David Sharun spent time last month in the Town of St. Paul, Alberta. The visit highlighted the community’s distinct character and the strong spirit of collaboration among neighbouring municipalities. Engaging directly on local priorities, while sharing the work ABmunis is doing to support municipal and provincial challenges, is a key part of these visits. Thank you for hosting us, Mayor Glenn Andersen.

With property tax notices now going out, it’s that time of year when many residents will ask questions about their assessment or property tax invoices. To help municipal leaders, Alberta Municipalities is providing a guide with answers to common questions, such as:

➡️ Why is my assessment higher/lower than today’s value of my home?
➡️ Why are my taxes higher than my neighbour's?
➡️ The value of my home increased. Does that mean I will have to pay more property tax?
➡️ Why is our tax rate higher than other communities?

ABmunis’ guide answers all these questions and more.

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) has released new resources to support municipalities in implementing legislative changes passed in 2025, including the Guidance for Public Bodies in Developing Privacy Management Programs and the Guidance for Public Bodies on Privacy Impact Assessments.

The Protection of Privacy Act and Access to Information Act came into force in June 2025. Public bodies, including municipalities, were provided a one year transition period to establish Privacy Management Programs (PMPs). All municipalities must have their PMPs in place by June 11, 2026.
