Dennis Schafer for Councillor

Dennis Schafer for Councillor Dennis Schafer is running in the 2014 elections for Fernie's city council. South of the Cypress Hills. I fell in absolute love with this town.

In a shell of a nut, my name is Dennis Schafer and I grew up on a farm south of a very small town named Consul, population of 70, in the very Southwest corner of Saskatchewan. The community and heart was big, but the actual town was minimal. I moved to Fernie firstly in the fall of 2002 and joined the RCR team as a snowboard instructor as well as did the video work for ski-school. Its small town t

ouch made me feel at home. I knew after that ski season that I NEED to raise my family here!! I moved back to the flat lands to gain occupation in the oil & gas patch to save up enough money to move back to the Elk Valley, buy a house and raise a family. So that’s what I did. I am currently a home owner, hockey coach and father of three. One being a 6 year old mini-man and two 8 month old twin girls. I always felt like I wanted to give more to this community but did not know how to give back to the extent I craved. Being elected to council I most definitely can give all I can to Fernie. I feel that there is a lot of youth in this town that does not have a voice. With myself in Council I can be your voice.

Hello Fernie-ites!!

Last time I reached out to friends to join us for our annual financial report, via txt message, just hours before the meeting due to a comment the Mayor had made that there had only been one person show up to it in all her years in office. That night almost 10 people showed up, shattering the record, and showed some serious interest in certain areas. It was really good to see and council and staff was impressed.

On Monday the 13th of July the City of Fernie will be holding a regular meeting at 7pm in the chambers at City Hall. Within this meeting the Annual Municipal Report of 2014 will be on the agenda.

This report will be a comprehensive review of the past years financial, operational info and significant achievments completed by council and staff.
It will be a good time to attend for the Mayor will ask for anyone from the public to ask questions concerning the report.

Other good points that will be touched upon are:
- an overview of the 2015 satisfaction survey (only 240 completed)
- Corporate Strategic Goals for 2015-2019
- Councils top 10 long term priorities
- Municipal objectives and operational highlights by department
- Audited Financial Statements for 2014

Please join us and get amongst it!!

Alright gang. It is all said and done. Swore my oath, did my orientation and it is time to do my part for this wonderful community. Thank you to all my friends and family for the help and support during the ol campaign. It was a very interesting process to be a part of!! Right from handing in my candidate nomination form to being there when they were tallying the votes. Very exciting. I look forward to the learning process I will go through the next 4 years. Thank you to all that made the effort to venture to the polls and cast your vote.

GRANDE FINALE!!

PLEASE PHONE AND TXT ALL YOUR FERNIE FRIENDS TO VOTE!!

PLEASE SHARE ON WALL!!

8am-8pm tomorrow at the Seniors Center across from City Hall.

So this is where it all pays off if the numbers come to vote. There were 176 voters that took advantage of the advance polls on the 5th and 12th. There are approximately 3444 eligible voters. It has been an adventurous, eye opening, learning curve that is an experience I am glad to be a part of. I would like to thank all the friends and family for the help, discussions, and support the past couple months. It has been tiring but rewarding!! I would like to thank Randal Macnair for having the time to answer my questions, giving advice and being a mentor for myself. 15 years ago he was in the same boat as myself. Put his hat in the ring and father to an 8 month old. Very much appreciated!! I have heard from so many people that he will be missed on council!! This is very true!! Thank you Ange Qualizza for the time you have giving me to discuss certain issues that surface in communities like our own and options to rectify them. Ange has her heart in all the right places and deserves to have a seat in council. Thank you Joe Warshawsky for having the odd coffee and answering questions I had from raising twins to current issues. All very appreciated!!

I spent yesterday and today going door to door. Asking questions, reminding to vote and just listening to what the public has to say. Wow, what an experience!! I was surprised on how many invited me in for a discussion on current issues and was baffled on how many people either didn't know about the election or thought they were not eligible. Of course it had to be -20 and made it quite a challenge to push on until I could tell it was supper time due to the wonderful smells in the air.

Thank you Fernie friends for all the support!! Now get your ass out to vote tomorrow!!
