Firefighters and heavy equipment operators have been able to take advantage of the recent rain to make excellent progress on containing wildfire MWF017, south of Fort McMurray. We are happy to share that this wildfire is now being held. This means that given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries. The City of Edmonton has responded to a request for assistance from the Alberta Emergency Management Agency to support a wildfire evacuation in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Beginning May 14 at 9 p.m., the City of Edmonton will accept evacuees. The reception centre will be located at the Clareview Community Recreation Centre at 3804 139 Avenue.

The reception centre will provide all immediate needs for evacuees including clothing, health care, mental health supports and pet care. The Red Cross will be on site to arrange lodging. Evacuees can bring their pets, and are encouraged to not leave animals in vehicles.

Edmontonians are asked not to bring donations of any kind to the reception centre. Donations and volunteers are not needed at this time.

UPDATE: Wildfire MWF012 is classified as being held as of April 22, 2024. Being held means that given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries.

We are currently responding to a number of new wildfires across the province. Most notably, Wildfire MWF012 was discovered in the Fort McMurray forest area yesterday. This wildfire is located approximately 4.5 km east of Saprae Creek Estates and is currently classified as out of control at 67 hectares in size.
