Allison Segeren on Goderich Town Council Councillor for the Town of Goderich 2022-2026

03/04/2025

An important update from the Special Council meeting on March 3, 2025 re: downtown revitalization project and next steps for memorial arena.
1) The tender for the downtown rebuild will be reopened. This may delay construction by approximately 30 days. However with snow melt this year, construction crews will have a later than normal start to the season.
2) NO decision has been made in regards to memorial arena. GSP has been contracted to gather public input and support development of options.

If you’re feeling frustrated, angry, or exhausted with the state of politics these days, you’re not alone. Some of our most cherished values and social institutions are on trial and at-risk - let’s fight for them; together!

It won’t be long before Ontarians and Canadians are heading to the polls again - what do you value and how can you fight for it everyday?

My remarks from last night’s Council meeting. Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) Lives Matter!!

I’d like to take an opportunity to make a statement in regards to the White Lives Matter sign that has been a point of concern for many residents.

For context, White Lives Matter originated as a white supremacist response in early 2015 to the Black Lives Matter movement for racial justice. This statement is not harmless or neutral. It is a racist statement that intentionally or unintentionally intimidates and terrorizes racially diverse people and communities.

As a leader, I want to affirm my commitment to racial justice, a commitment that I believe is shared by this Council, town staff, and the majority of residents in our town. To those residents who see this sign and feel fear or anxiety and might question whether they are welcome and belong in Goderich - I see you, I care for you, I’m glad you’re here. I’m also sorry you continue to experience racism. Know that this council and the vast majority of residents in Goderich do not harbour or wish to promote feelings of hatred or acts of discrimination. We have continued work to do on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion and that work is best done together!

At yesterday’s meeting, Council passed the following resolution. Let’s all continue to ensure love and justice trump hate and discrimination in our community.

Whereas municipal governments in Canada, along with other levels of government, have responsibilities under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as federal, provincial and territorial human rights codes, and therefore have an important role to play in addressing racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and other forms of discrimination.

And whereas the Town of Goderich is committed to the goal of fostering a welcoming and caring community by strengthening a sense of belonging among every citizen who makes Goderich home, as outlined in the 2024-2027 Strategic Action Plan and evidenced in our equity diversity and inclusion Human Resources Policy No. 03-2022 (Nov 2024);

And whereas the Town of Goderich rejects racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and discrimination related intolerance in all forms;

Be it therefore resolved that the Town of Goderich hereby:

Reaffirms its commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion through its by-laws and policies, and strongly supports the vigorous enforcement of the hate propaganda and hate and bias motivated crime provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada in the interests of public safety and the well-being of all its citizens;

Commits to working together with other organizations and jurisdictions including other levels of government, Indigenous peoples, public and private sector institutions, and civic society organizations, to foster equality, an appreciation of cultural diversity, and respect;

Takes specific actions and implements programs to cultivate a sense of belonging for all citizens, including initiatives such as the painting of the Pride crosswalk, providing support for public organizations through the Community Grants program, creating Welcome packages for new residents, enhancing accessibility throughout the Town, and organizing public awareness campaigns on key social issues through the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan; and

Regularly assesses and reassesses our policies, procedures and actions to ensure they continue to foster and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in our community.

On August 23, 2024, the Rebuilding Downtown Task Force met to determine a set of recommendations on the design of the Square that would be presented to Town Council. There was a robust discussion that included questions and comments from the many citizens that were present. Link to meeting report: https://pub-goderich.escribemeetings.com/FileStream.ashx?DocumentId=42533
The recording of this meeting will be available on Monday (August 26) on the Town’s website.

On September 4, 2024 at 11:00am, Council will meet to discuss the recommendations from the Task Force so that the project can be tendered. This is an important and necessary step to ensure we are on-track towards our project completion goal of May 2026. This meeting is open to the public (you can attend in Council Chambers) and will be live streamed (you can attend via zoom). Feel free to email, call or direct message me with any questions or concerns!

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is my passion. It's what I teach to Teacher Education students and graduate students at Western University. Many residents have expressed concern about a rise in prejudice and discrimination in Goderich. Education has a huge role to play in combating hate and making our community a place where everyone belongs. Please consider reading and sharing this incredible resource from the Huron Huron County Immigration Partnership.

Exciting and progressive change coming to waste management in Goderich!

As of September 23, 2024, garbage collection will transition to automated collection. This new service includes bi-weekly (every other week) solid waste, and weekly organics collection. I, for one, can’t wait to use the green bins. Let’s divert as much waste as we can from our quickly overflowing landfills!

Beginning on September 9, you will receive new bins - grey/black for solid waste and green for organics. Cart delivery is scheduled to begin on September 9.

The service will remain user pay with a fee included on your tax bill. The fee is $150 annually and will be prorated for 2024 in the amount of $50. Unused garbage stickers may be returned to Town Hall for a full refund until the end of the day on October 11, 2024.

On September 5 from 3-6 pm there will be an Open House at Town Hall to answer questions about the new service. Come on out, see the bins, get your questions answered!

Stay tuned for more information to follow on the Town Website including schedules, allowable items for each bin and much more : https://www.goderich.ca/en/my-goderich/garbage-and-recycling.aspx #

Curbside waste collection in Goderich is contracted to Waste Management.  In the event your garbage is missed, call 1(888) 730-3344 ext. #1. Please see below for collection information.
