To the 1194 (unofficial) wonderful citizens of Grande Prairie that put their trust in me and casted a ballot for me, I thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Although I didn’t quite get enough votes to get a seat at the table, it was more than I expected.
This doesn’t mean the job is done. There plenty of work to do. We need to hold this newly elected council accountable. They will want to raise our taxes over next four years. We can’t afford to pay more. They will continue spending money on things that many deem not as important as others.
It’s time for more citizens to get involved in local politics. I know it’s not fun. I know we don’t have time in our busy schedules. This is no longer an option.
The number of people that voted in the election is entirely too low. City council needs to know we are not happy. If we sit back and accept the status quo, we’re in for some really rough waters ahead.

Congratulations to the winners. Now be prepared to be held accountable for the choices you make over the next 4 years.

Congratulations to Jena Flach and Len Auger for being elected as new members of Grande Prairie city council. Also, congrats to the incumbents that are coming back for another term.
While disappointed I won’t be joining them, I’m so grateful for the experience of running in this election. I have learned so much from this experience. I will most certainly be back in 4 years with a better game plan.

Homelessness in Grande Prairie – Asking the Right Questions

Grande Prairie has developed a reputation for strong programs to help people experiencing homelessness. That’s something we can be proud of. Housing supports, transitional programs, and local partnerships have all made an impact.

But we also need to look deeper. From past councils, we’ve heard that many people experiencing homelessness here came to Grande Prairie for job opportunities—only to find that the offer fell through, leaving them stranded with nowhere to turn. To address this, the city has even created a program that will pay to help people return home if they find themselves in this difficult position.

Here’s the problem: how often is this program being used? And how accurate is the claim that “many of our homeless” are in this situation? These are important questions that deserve clear answers. If the majority of people in need are local residents, our response might look different than if many are people passing through.

At the same time, we cannot ignore other challenges. Even when housing is found, high property taxes make affordability a struggle for everyone—from those just starting out to long-time homeowners.

My commitment is simple:
• Support effective programs that truly help people get back on their feet.
• Ensure our resources are being used wisely and transparently.
• Keep affordability at the forefront—for every resident of Grande Prairie.

Homelessness is complex. The solutions require compassion, accountability, and clear information. Grande Prairie deserves leadership willing to ask the hard questions and follow through with action.

Back to Basics: Putting Core Services First in Grande Prairie

When it comes to building a strong and thriving city, everything starts with the basics. Core services form the backbone of a community that works — reliable roads, safe neighborhoods, clean water, effective waste management, and essential infrastructure. These are not luxuries; they are necessities.

That’s why I believe future city budgets must stay focused on what truly matters. Too often, municipalities find themselves sidetracked by non-essential projects — the kinds of “nice-to-have” initiatives that sound appealing but don’t directly improve the everyday lives of the majority of residents. These projects can come with big price tags, and over time, they shift valuable resources away from the very things residents count on most.

Grande Prairie deserves better.

Our tax dollars should be working harder for us — fixing potholes, supporting emergency services, keeping our parks safe and clean, and ensuring our city infrastructure keeps pace with growth. Every dollar should be allocated where it’s needed most, with the clear goal of making a measurable difference in our community.

This comes down to one principle: responsible spending.

Residents deserve to know that their taxes are being used effectively and responsibly. That means no pet projects, no misplaced priorities, and no diversions from the core needs that make Grande Prairie a safe, welcoming, and prosperous place to live.

As your city councillor, I will work to bring focus back to the essentials. Our city should not be stretched thin chasing initiatives that don’t reflect the priorities of residents. Instead, we must build a strong foundation by taking care of the basics first — because when the essentials are taken care of, everything else has a chance to thrive.

Let’s make sure Grande Prairie’s future is built on solid ground.

Is internet infrastructure the most important thing that city council should be looking at? Not really. But it is becoming more and more important as time goes on. If Grande Prairie is going to become a center for business and industry, fast and reliable internet will absolutely become one of the biggest bottlenecks companies will run into.
What is life going to be like when there is a world class data center just south of our city, and we're stuck at just better than dial up internet access.
Tough conversations need to be had with stakeholders in this arena. Telus, Rogers, CRTC and the federal government all have opinions on why Grande Prairie doesn't have the access that we're going to need. If given the chance, I'll be spearheading those conversations.

Thanks to everyone that came forward for me. The support in one single day was amazing. Everyone, even those that didn’t get their signature on my nomination, came together to make this happen. Now on to the next stage, CAMPAIGNING. I can’t wait to see how it goes 😀😀😀😀 Thanks everyone

One of the first things I’ve learned about this entire process of running for council; I don’t have enough pictures of myself. Try making social media content with 3 pictures of yourself :)

I'm diving into the unknown. I'm running as a candidate for Grande Prairie City Council. I'm joining the public sphere to bring the voice that I feel has been missing from city council. I have no idea what to expect, but if I don't try, I'll never find out.

Vote Rob Wasylciw for Grande Prairie City Council in the 2025 Municipal Election. Local leader focused on lower taxes, safer streets, stronger community, and better internet infrastructure.
