After 2 years as a Training Officer... I saw a need for a little raw truth about becoming a First responder...
After interviewing numerous Fire, Police, EHS and Military personal who were involved in close calls, I decided to publish the results of their advice, when they were asked....
"What are some of YOUR emotional or physical tools you've used to control your fear/stress on the job?"
Here are a few of their (anonymous) coping tips and techniques. I hope some of you find these helpful!
Rob Girard
Captain, Halifax Fire.
"First Responders are expected to go towards the emergency scene when everyone else is going the opposite direction!
Written in invisible ink, somewhere in the contract lies the expectation that we will always be brave, courageous, and can deal with any crises, while making it all go away. If this is true, how do we it?
Whether you're a fresh new recruit, a seasoned captain, or a training officer, understanding WHY we react to fears and stress, and how to cope, is a tool everyone should have in their belt.
Complete with interviews from seasoned firefighters, police, paramedics and even military veterans, a little knowledge can go a long way."
